SE does put effort into their games, the issue is usually that effort is poorly distributed. Graphics, world building, story/lore, and design/art being the things.

And becuase of that the story, gameplay, characters, and open world suffers. No matter how SE for one off games only about 30hrs long it just doeasnt work. Unlike in FF10 where the game was actually plenty long enough to capitalize off the above.

FF15 is practically the culmination of everything wrong with the fanchise in today.

Square had a winning formula and they don't want to follow it because it's easier to just follow the latest trend (open world, action rpg, etc).

The thing is people will pay regardless of what they put out. If FF7 was complete souless, it'd still sell well because of fanboys.

You can't exactly call it "the easy way" given how long and troubled the development of 15 was. Like it or hate it it was not an easy, lazy game.

Eh, instead of scrapping it like they should have, they scraped it together in the most half assed way possible and still released an early access game that was HORRIBLE until they patched it and released paid dlc.

FF10 was the last Squaresoft game. I believe they lost a lot of talent when S-E happened. Enix was niche in the west compared to Squaresoft. All over a stupid scifi movie that didn't feel like FF at all.

To be fair Tabata best efforts before taking on FF15 was still not even close to FF mainline quality. He should of never been givin the nod.

I mean, when it's all said and done, FF15 is a decent game. It isnt groundbreaking like FF7 but it's certainly not a bad game. I had a lot of fun with it.

People tell me the stories in 11 and 14 are amazing. I've been thinking of trying to get into them again. Played both a little bit but barely got anywhere

People say 13 plays itself. I cant help but wonder what game they were playing because I have specific memories of me and my classmates bitching about how tough the bosses were. That game was no cakewalk. It held your hand for a bit but the bosses required legit strategy

if you're evaluating the story as a whole, absolutely not. for each of the highs like heavensward thru 3.3 and shadowbringers you get trash like the entirety of arr up until Shiva, all of 3.4 & 3.5, and all of 4.x

I'd say the only FF game its fair to say plays itself is 12 because the way to optimize your party is via setting up their AI controls as best as possible for an encounter. And even then you still have to manually course correct.

13 may not have you control the party members directly, but you wield a lot of indirect split second control via manipulation of their AI.

15 is... not at all playing itself. You're clearly holding down the O button to attack and then holding down the square button to dodge and then using triangle to sit by yourself away from the fight to regain your mp.

The fact that they gave her the several patches long redemption arc rather than Fordola who deserved it much more (even though I do think what she got was good) was absurd.

I literally just replayed 13, and its not like it requires any strategy. You can get through the entire game switching between like 3 paradigms. The only remotely difficult sections are (a few) of the summon battles and the last 3 post game bosses
