It's a self fulfilling prophecy. People who freak out make things worse and add to issues like scarcity

Western WA here. We went to Costco yesterday for our normal shopping trip. It was a madhouse. Cashier said that day and Friday were both insane due to people freaking out over coronavirus.

I don't understand it...do these people intend to barricade themselves starting now until the virus passes? are they afraid that they will be quarantined in their homes one day? What is stocking up on Paper Towels gonna do?

Probably best to be safe than sorry. Better to have too much water and paper towels.

Yes.

What is stocking up on Paper Towels gonna do?

Keep them in supply when they can no longer acquire them.

Paper towels might seem trivial but a lot of people get dependent on them and they become one of those things that you don't realize how much you use until you don't have them. I stopped using them over a year ago and I still find myself reaching for the roll holder if I need to clean something up.

Anyway, this is why you continuously evaluate and re-stock your supplies, not just go wild in cases of emergency.

I dunno, that picture is a pretty general example of how much people buy at Costco on a normal basis lol.

But I work at a Home Depot and we've been cleaned out of all our face masks for the past two weeks. It's annoying because you got people looking for them because they actually need them for painting or dust protection and they can't get any because of these paranoid idiots buying dozens of boxes at a time (and if they're Asian, then they're planning to ship them off to China).

if everyone is swarming the stores, won't people catch the virus from other shoppers? I feel like they should order food online instead

I went to get groceries earlier yesterday and I noticed no real change.

Bought some TP, soap, veggies, dried pasta, butter, and everything was pretty in stock

except for a very particular brand of pancake mix that i like

weird

I mean it was busy, but it's always busy on Saturdays

and yes, that's why the "rushing" stage of an epidemic is the worst part.

you see people going to buy groceries, gas, going to banks, checking into clinics or hospital emergency rooms, crowding and spreading the illness around
