Masks can certainly help against getting the virus, but there's a lot of other things you would have be doing as well in order for a mask to be effective. Of course the average person is either too lazy to do everything they would need to or ignorant about the work required to make a mask work.

i wear it for other reasons and also long before coronavirus. I wear it to keep out normal germs, cigarette smoke, people's farts, and also generally looks cool because mine is black and made of quality material

Masks are a pseudo-quarantine measure. They are worn to minimize the transmission, not the contraction of airborne illness.

Well that is great you and others know this. Many in general public don't and I have overheard many talk about ordering masks or saying they would start to wear them soon in my area. A couple people at my job are already wearing masks. Since they feel if they get sick they fucked and will end up homeless missing 2+ weeks of work.

There's reports of experts in full protective gear getting infected, like that recent case at an airport.

They don't protect you much. They're there so you don't infect others and if you have them, keep them until your city gets quarantined so you can leave your home.
