Do you remember Funcoland? I remember getting games from them then they were bought out by gamestop.

I remember selling my Sega and a bunch of games/accessories there without my parents permission and getting Shadows of the Empire for N64 when I was 10 or so.

My dad found out and was rip shit. He took me back there and made them trade everything back

I remember that they would put out a monthly newspaper that had a huge amount of games/systems listed with their current prices. I used to read that thing all of the time and wondered what it'd be like to have some of the games on there - not only was I too young to work at the time, my family didn't really buy me games, so I was lucky to get one or two at Christmas, maybe another if I was able to get enough birthday money from everyone. I tried googling for it and found a bunch of examples, and man, do they really bring back some memories. Here's a good one:

also Im pretty sure Funcoland/Software Etc/Gamestop had a name long before it turned into Funcoland

I remember when Funcoland and EB Games both existed as separate companies.

Heck, I remember when EB Games was Electronics Boutique. (It was my favorite, then Funcoland, then Gamestop in a distant 3rd)

Great place.
They let you try all the games and it was aeesome.

Funcoland is where I traded in my NES and SNES to get my PS1.

By the time they stopped being Funcoland and turned into GameStop, I'd reached a point where I had enough money that I stopped trading in games forever. Added to the fact that I kind of hate getting used games unless I have absolutely no other choice, and I hate their BS policy of taking new games out of the boxes, and I almost never went to GameStop.

They weren't really "bought out" by GameStop. Both Babbages'/GameStop and Funco got bought out by Barnes & Noble, which just smooshed them all together under Funco admin but with the GameStop name.

Essentially, the original GameStop died 20 years ago, and the current GameStop is just what's left of Funco wearing GameStop's face.

Ehh, I've always dyslexically confused those two in my head. I usually have to make a conscious effort to not make that mistake whenever typing either one out (if anything, I'm almost more impressed that I only screwed it up once there).

Just another reason to hate the shitty GameFAQs/GameSpot merger.
