People go nuts for Korean dramas but it's rare to see discussion about J Dramas. there even are streaming services now I think for Korean stuff. but I've never really found a good one that focuses on japanese live action. what is it about korean dramas that people prefer? you would think japanese would be huge on the internet where everyone loves all japanese things

Have you ever tried Japanese live action films? I have, and I've flat out never seen a good one. I have no idea what percentage of Korean films are actually worth watching, but there is a solid lineup of amazing films I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone with an open mind. Anime is popular because there are great ones from every genre. Even if you think animation is for kids, I bet I could find you one you'd like.

I'm fine with anime. I didn't mean I didn't like it. I used to be a huge weaboo. I was saying why is J Dramas not as popular as anime. anyway, the only live action japanese movies I have seen are horror films. I've never seen a J drama tv show though. partly cause it seems so hard to find them in the west for some reason

OK then---enlighten me. Which ones are worth watching? It might just be how Korea does licensing, but every Korean film I've ever seen on Amazon or Netflix has been great.

Most of my favourite films are Japanese and live action, it's probably the thing they do best out of every country in the world.

Oh and tc Amazon have been coproducing Japanese live action dramas and comedies for a few years now, there's some good stuff.

Even Kurosawa could make a stinker, specifically I Live in Fear and Rhapsody in August.

Yes, "which ones" of all of Japanese cinema are worth watching. Great question to ask someone.

Well, to name three.. Still Walking by Koreeda. 13 Assasins by Miike, and Hanabi by Kitano.

Don't think I've ever seen I Live in Fear so maybe that's why I don't mind it.

Yeah. It's not like there's some Japanese movie from the 50s that was this timeless classic inspiring international culture 70 years later or anything.

I think part of the reason modern live action film struggles in Japan is the relatively low budget appearance of it tied with a relatively small amount of innovation in terms of storytelling. Sure, anime can absolutely be generic as well, but it at least has a lot of spectacle going for it.

Even in Japan itself, their modern live action films (save for a select few) struggle to grab the attention of Japanese audiences.

As a Korean, I don't really care for anime other than stuff like Akira, Princess Mononoke, and Cromartie High. That said, I like some Japanese movies. I haven't watched any Japanese dramas, so I can't speak to those, but I'm sure there are probably some good ones.

I get the low budget comment but the idea that Japanese films aren't innovative in terms of storytelling is madness.

Not that they don't exist, but that a lot of the ones advertised most prevalently to Japanese audiences are not.

Whenever anyone accuses Japanese actors of overacting, Takashi Shimura barely even moves throughout the whole film - and that's the whole point.
