It's an indo-european word blended from Licht (white) and Lux (light), as well as leoht/liht/lihtan (to light)

...

Weirdly not a Greek word, which uses "phos" for light, as in phosporescence

Lok, you gotta remember that the base level of what english is is first and foremost indo-european, so extremely basic things are based in that.
For example, Ox is an indo-european word, and you can see it show up very similarly in more or less every european language.

So why don't they call matter "heavy" then?

Light in comparison with dark. We know that dark is heavier than light, because it settles in corners, in cracks, under things, and, of course, in caves and at the bottom of the ocean. Dark is also slower than light, if you watch closely when turning off a lamp or lightbulb, you can see the dark moving in to replace the light.

I remember when I was a kid I had a Dr. Seuss book that said something like, "If there are flashlights for when its dark, are there flashdarks for when its light?" and I remember that I really wanted a flashdark after that.

You might read the Bell Labs article about how "lightbulbs" are actually "dark-suckers".
