All I can think is that maybe there's a lot of people who would rank Yoshi towards the bottom of this list (because he's just a dinosaur, not to mention absent from many of the best games), but the people who like him (because he's a dinosaur and that's awesome) rank him #1 often. There's plenty of room for him to be a favorite when things are this subdivided but not to be the strongest overall. You can see this in other favorites poll.
