Eternals will feature an openly gay superhero who is a married family man.
WandaVision will bring us Scarlet Witchs son, Wiccan, who is the boyfriend of Hulkling.
Upcoming Thor movie will feature Valkyrie, who will be looking for her queen.

And now New Mutants will feature a romance between two lesbian superheroes:

Boy things have changed. This all would have been impossible 15 years ago.

None of that should have to be announced as news. It should just be considered normal. They dont announce hetero relationships before a movie comes out. People need to get over gay people existing

Except for the part where they do. Natalie Portman in Thor. Hayley Atwell (Peggy) in Captain America. Chris Pine in Wonder Woman. Even Scarjo and Mark Ruffalo was talked about in the media prior to Ultrons release.

Hetero love interests and relationships are brought up all the time in comic book movies. It's the norm so it doesnt stand out as much.

Hell I haven't even gone into the CW verse and the cast of actors that have been introduced prior to the start of a season as the "love interest" for the protagonist.

To the people complaining that this is making headlines:

the only reason it's making headlines is because it's uncommon for gay characters to be leading characters in blockbuster movies. So far companies like Disney have not yet made any major movies that star an openly gay character.

When it becomes commonplace, people will naturally stop writing articles about it (since it won't be anything new) and you can then stop whining and act like a normal person.

Agreed. The scene they had in Endgame was good; and it wasn't hyped up or anything - it was natural. Advertising characters as gay or non-straight is not natural and turns people away.

There are plenty of characters that COULD BE gay but aren't shown as such. It is more common to see a straight person in media (probably because there are more straight people in the world overall), but just because a person does not openly state they are gay or straight does not mean they are or are not either.

Do gay (or straight) people in public often flaunt their sexuality? I am straight, but I don't go around saying I am straight. There are those who are big on PDA, but most people don't really show their relationships openly.

Characters like Barney from HIMYM are super common in media. Nobody literally shouts "Look how gay/straight I am" but you see player types of dudes in media all the time. You dont even necessarily have to be that type of character to flaunt your sexuality.

Seems like they are going overboard now honestly to make up for it or something. Not every new Marvel movie or tv show needs to have a gay character for things to be equal or whatever. Gay people do only make up 5% of the population after all.

Straight people don't realize how often they disclose their sexuality in casual conversation.

A straight guy says "I'll just have my girlfriend pick me up" nobody gives a second thought

Any time I'm saying something like that to someone new I pause first to decide whether they're gonna react weirdly, because I KNOW in their head they're gonna be thinking about how I just revealed I'm not straight.

If you're in a relationship, yes it's very quickly gonna come up in casual conversation unless you specifically go out of your way to obfuscate.

Buuuuuut... Disney has long held off on LGBTQ characters. This is the first real sign that homophobia no longer has power. Who knows? Maybe Frozen 3 will finally canonize Elsa as gay.

Those statements are JUST as common for same sex partners. In every day conversation though, it is rare for someone to learn of a sexual partner. I don't tell the store clerks about my partners - much like we should not always know a person's orientation over a 2.5 hour movie.

I haven't seen Frozen 2 yet, are there actually hints that she might be gay? After seeing the first movie I assumed that she had some pretty serious PTSD kind of issues going on that would keep her from letting herself get close to anybody that way. Like, how can you be Elsa and not consider that you might actually kill your partner if you lose control for a moment?

Does Elsa need to have a relationship? Just because a character exists does not mean they need to be defined by their sexuality.

It's kinda like Mile Morales. When people think of him; what do they think of first? "The Black Spider Man" mostly. When people think of T'Challa, people think of the actual character and not just "the Black version of x" or for some cases "the gay version of x."

It is better to draw audiences toward actual character building aside from intimacy. It can be a small detail (as it should be), but by making it a defining character trait it is hurting the population more than not.

Dude

It's way more common than you realize. Only this evening, two straight people I'd never met before brought their partners up somehow into unrelated conversations, plus at least five-ish people I spoke to on the phone while at work today. You spend 2 hours in a movie about a character and there's a good chance the existence of their relationship is gonna come up. Love and relationships are a huge part of our lives. It's silly to act like that's far-fetched.

MaverickXeo posted...

The reason people speculated about Elsa is mainly because her story in Frozen closely parallels the experience many gay people have.

And just because a character happens to be in a relationship doesn't mean that character is defined just by their sexuality. Nobody ever wastes breath complaining that Iron Man is defined by his sexuality just because he's straight.

Some characters ARE basically nothing more than their sexuality (straight characters in particular--so many straight characters in movies are there just to exist as a bland nondescript partner for the main character). Sometimes it's not even a bad thing for a character to be mostly defined by their sexuality, because some people IRL really are like that.

But then whenever a character is openly gay in mainstream media...people get weird about it

I mean it's pretty fucking normal for actors to make movies yet there's announcements and actors making movies all the fucking time. Like, how is "Robert Pattinson is Batman" news? If it is news, why is it, something that literally happens every day, more important than something that literally didn't exist in major Blockbusters for most of last decade and prior?

lol I mean we have been accused of being the cause of natural disasters like Katrina or the Haiti earthquake in 2010

But it's more about how she was taught to conceal something about herself from everybody even though it is tearing her up inside and ruining her relationships with loved ones. She is outed in front of everybody, flees in shame and fear, and eventually realizes it was something to celebrate, not to hide or fear.

It resonated with a lot of people, not just the gays, which is why Elsa is such a popular character.
