Well, first of all, Im not sure about it being the greatest game of all time. Though, its probably a really good game. Second, as I said, I didnt own the game. Plus, it came out when I was like 6. And at that age, it probably wasnt that appealing to me. So, I probably just had other games I was playing.

These days, Im not sure if I want to play it. Its been so hyped up, though I usually dont expect anything to be as good as people make it sound. Plus, Id get overwhelmed with the characters trying to get them all (45, IIRC), even though only a few are good, apparently... Eh... Maybe if I get some free time and have some extra money to spend...

Yeah, CC is pretty terrible.

I prefer CC to CT personally. Amazing summer game due to the amazing color use, Archipelago setting, arguably the best OST Mitsuda ever made (actually made me want to learn violin, namely due to the Dreams of the Shore ~ Another World track) it pushed the PS1 to its limits graphically and still looks great even today and even mostly maintained the frame rate, far more so if you upscale it and almost no loading in the game at that.

I also loved the idea behind having all those characters and the unique ways they went about trying to make them come off as different and the replay value it could give. Plus even if you have no interest in that, there's still story important characters that are mandatory in every playthrough anyway so you can just pretend that's how the game is anyway. The battle system is a nice twist on the classic formula and pretty unique even now as well. The plot is where the game falls apart as its far too convoluted for its own good even if you can also easily tl;dr why everything happens very easily once you understand things.

Good points. I bought CC on release and played through it but never picked it back up once I was done. I think that I put too much thought into CT while playing it and was looking more for that experience again. I should probably go back and replay it sometime?

Maybe a Chrono Cross remake would be better if they ever do it. You have to replay the game 3 times in order to get all characters on the same save file.

Yeah, CC is weird in that it is definitely a sequel to CT, direct even but doesn't take a direct sequel approach and lets that be the background part of most the game and then near the end starts making it more important. It actually does it fairly well and doesn't feel tacked on as they tie it to the beginning events of the game well. Even more impressive for the fact that CC is technically unfinished as Disc 2 was supposed to be much longer and there's some parts of the game that make this seem obvious once you learn that fact though you'd never know it just playing the game as it feels complete and has a proper conclusion.

Anyway, it's simultaneously being its own game and a sequel to CT at the same time if that makes sense. If you treat it as a pure CT2 then yeah, you're going to be disappointed and even bothered by a lot of things it changed that were among the reasons CT is so beloved. The game is definitely culture shock to those unaware given what you expect vs what it is when it's new to you.

These days, everyone knows the deal so now it's possible to enjoy the game for what it is as opposed to what it changed.

It's actually possible to get all the characters in a single playthrough. You need to make use of branching saves. Basically, anytime you get to a point where the character recruitment path is about to split, save the game. Then using the new game + or continue + feature, having clear data of the path with the specific branch you have (IE beat the game with them which means you have to do it 3 times but on NG+ and Continue+ you can do this at any point in the game) and an in game key item the Chrono Cross element at Sprigg's house going through the hydra marshes distortion to get back there you'll have everyone. IIRC you need 3 saves total. It sounds complicated but it's actually REALLY easy.

Chrono Trigger's decent, but far from being the best game ever. It deserves credit for setting a lot of the standards that modern RPG's now follow, but the fact that so many other games have followed in its footsteps makes it pretty unremarkable by modern standards. Well worth playing, but not the life-defining experience many make it out to be.
