By limiting exposure, people are exposed to the virus at a slower rate, so the health care system is less overwhelmed and fewer people die.

a) If you can get the average number of people each person infects below 1, it will eventually die out on its own (faster the further below 1 you can get it). In a scenario where we've largely failed this will be helped by herd immunity (i.e. the number of people you're infecting is proportional to the number of uninfected people you're interacting with).

b) Hold out until a vaccine is developed (probably 1-1.5 years)

1-1.5 years lmao I'll be dead by then

Re surfaces, the virus does survive on them for a while (hours to days depending on the surface type; quite possible that temperature and humidity also affect this, but I haven't seen any data on that). However, washing your hands thoroughly before touching your face will cut down on this infection vector a lot (as will routinely disinfecting high touch surfaces).

Researchers have confirmed that immunity with the coronavirus exists. If people are being reinfected then either that immunity isn't perfect or there are multiple strains that are different enough to not share immunity, Another possibility is that he never actually fully got over the original virus and it reemerged.

In any case, there should be some immunity, which should help a bit in mitigating the worst case scenario. I'm really guessing that life is just going to be substantially altered for the next year to a year and a half, and the faster people adapt to that the smaller the consequences will be.

Depends on what is making the reinfection.
If it's a different strain, still good. If it's that you aren't really cured but there's very small traits that may become dormant to later reappear, also still good. And if it's like chicken pox/shingles, fine as well.

If it builds up some resistance but not a safe bet ala cold... I mean, something's better than nothing.

Afaik the reason you can get the cold multiple times a year is that there are actually a bunch of different viruses that all have similar symptoms (including some coronaviruses!) and which we identify as "colds."

It is true that immunity lasts different amounts of time for different viruses, though. Hopefully this ones' isn't too short.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/30/well/live/can-you-get-two-colds-at-once.html

Yes, you can. The phenomenon is known medically as coinfection and occurs when two germs, in this case viruses, cause infections at the same time.
More than 100 viruses can cause the common cold, so its not unusual to be exposed to two at once. And, since one virus doesnt typically confer immunity against the other, its not unusual to be infected by two viruses at once.
The best data about coinfection come from studies of more serious viruses, such as H.I.V. and hepatitis. These studies show that coinfection can worsen, ameliorate or have no impact on the course of an illness. The outcome depends on the viruses involved.
With H.I.V., coinfection with the two main types, H.I.V.-1 and H.I.V.-2, is actually beneficial. It slows the progression of the disease. Coinfection with H.I.V. and hepatitis C virus, on the other hand, worsens the outcome.

With influenza viruses, which cause respiratory infections similar to that of the common cold, coinfection is uncommon. Coinfection with influenza A and B, two major types of flu virus, occurs in fewer than 2 percent of cases but doesnt seem to affect the overall outcome.
Coinfection with the common cold has proved difficult to study in the past because of the large number of viruses that can cause a cold. In the last few years, however, advances in molecular genetics have afforded scientists insights into the rhinovirus, the most common cause of the common cold.
In 2009, scientists were able to sequence all of the genetic material from the 99 known strains of rhinovirus. They found that coinfection with multiple strains is a common occurrence. They also found that coinfection provided viruses an opportunity to mutate into new strains.
Diagnostic tests for many of the viruses that cause colds have now become commercially available. In 2013, doctors used these tests to study 225 children in day care. Almost half were infected with more than one virus when they got sick. Children infected with multiple viruses did not appear to be sicker than those infected with a single virus, but they stayed sick longer. These findings were recently confirmed by a systematic review of all published studies.
So while you can get two colds at once, you probably wont feel any worse than you would with one. The difference that you might experience is being sick for longer than you might otherwise expect.

I agree, and I don't want to get too hung up on one example... though if he never got fully over it, then it was a false negative test? And the virus just... hibernated for a couple of weeks before re-emerging? So maybe another slightly different strain or yeah, some people are better at getting over it than others. Hrm...

yeah, false negative testing exists plenty in this virus. it's possible that the 14% reinfection rate in Guangzhou is related to faulty testing early on, though the fact that it's emerged in other places suggests that there is a value there, we just don't know why, what, or if that's what it really is. some more recent tests i think are 3% but still not as accurate as lung imaging or really, anything checking lungs directly. this is why multiple tests are given at different times as, regardless of what's making the false result, that should greatly minimize any false results.

My moms church closed. At least around here it seems like most protestant churches are closing at least a couple weeks, but most catholic churches are staying open. This is the lenten season, so really the worst time for this to happen to the catholic church. For various protestant denominations, the focus is more on just Easter and not the lent part, so they will probably reopen for that if they can.

Something that may explain the higher ICU rates for younger people in some areas (was just reading that this is the case in Netherlands) could be that the more virulent strain of the virus (the L strain) got bottlenecked from normal containment procedures since it presents symptoms faster and more prominently but then propagated with ease in places that weren't practicing social distancing yet. A majority of the cases in Wuhan were the L strain, but the majority worldwide are the S strain.

It is possible to get both the L and S strain at the same time. I believe the first patient in the US had both.
