As of today there are more total cases outside of China than inside. Also Italy is just shy of having twice as many active cases as China still has (if their recent numbers are legit anyway).

That is assuming China's numbers are legit.

Remember we have accounts that China and Iran were lying about numbers. Italy is possibly the first true numbers we are getting.

Not saying they were lying, but it is curious.

My downstairs neighbor sent me a text that he "got from his sister who got it from her husband who is military" claiming that the President is going to order a national 2-week quarantine sometime within the next 48-72 hours.

I hadn't thought of it, but I'm now assuming these types of texts have been sweeping through communities like wildfire and not doing much to quell a sense of panic. We suck.

In all seriousness, have heard similar from people with more insider info. Nothing concrete at the moment, but there are definitely high level people pushing for more local travel restrictions(It was more broad, ie, no state to state).

But within reason and I assume everyone here has, make absolutely certain you have supplies for 2 weeks.

This guy has done a but of a deep dive on the SK and Italy CFR and death numbers. His analysis and conclusions soud plausible to my (layman's) eyes.

https://medium.com/@andreasbackhausab/coronavirus-why-its-so-deadly-in-italy-c4200a15a7bf

In short we should expect a CFR of c.1% in high income countries where the health system is not overwhelmed (and those fatalities will be mostly over 60 or with pre-existing conditions).

The positive side effects of this are definitely being understated and I feel it needs to be remembered as many of these practices should continue.

People are wanting to bring back manufacturing.
Borders suddenly matter.
People are focusing on health.
People are more conscious of unwanted touchings.
Employers are focused on health, well being, and what their actions could do.
Literally ISIS is scaling back operations to avoid Corona virus.

If you're right wing, the list goes even bigger - decrease in abortions, guns and the matter of personal safety becoming a lot more popular - but frankly this is pretty amazing.

(Lefties are happy too with the business reforms happening and the focus on healthcare.)

And I hope that it doesn't even come close, but a lot of it will depend on the next few months, how everyone reacts to it over time, and what decisions goverments are making now and throughout the spring. If things go wrong somewhere or an issue arises for whatever reason, it could spiral further out of control.

I'm curious to see how the American and Canadian health care systems compare to eachother in how this all shakes out

I've heard americans are getting billed like $3k just to get tested, and that doesn't include treatment. That's sounds insane to me but maybe that's normal there. If everyone accrues thousands in medical bills/debt as a result of this at a time where income is also restricted, that sounds like a big problem.

In Canada, the failure would be that people just aren't able to get testing and treatment done in a timely manner.

I wonder if poor performance could provoke a change in either system

So we're going the French route.
Bars is easily the most expected and easiest closures. Restaurants little harder. But as Ohio's apparently doing, doable.

With a state of emergency government can also impose a curfew and that'd be next. If THAT isn't enough... Not sure what else can be done. There should be a massive mobilization for medical manufacturing right now and I'm not seeing it.

My health insurance provider (Cigna) just said all COVID 19-related healthcare will be 100% covered. I'm sure other large insurers will follow. If that does happen, then advantage US in that scenario.

Arguably the only thing bad about universal healthcare is the waitlists.

It's in principle possible for isolation to stop it; South Korea has gotten growth down to being linear and could be more aggressive. It requires that people comply with distancing even as things appear to be getting better, though.

I mean, as long as I'm not paying for it doesn't make a difference to me either way. Of course, you're referring to people who maybe don't have insurance and so forth. I imagine that maybe people were being billed initially for COVID-related care, but it sure seems like the US is leaning towards unilaterally making Covid-related care free.

My sister is in London, where they have universal health care. It's really great to get care at no cost over there, but the wait times and limitations on selection are a legitimate thing. Also, my sister had a baby over there. It's her second. She had her first in the US. In the US, you get your own private room, a lot more flexibility with scheduling, and more time in the hospital if needed. In the UK, she had to share a room, scheduling was made for her, and they kicked her out earlier than what I wouldve liked (which led the tear in her c-section scar to break open from all the additional movement).

Bottom line is that its great that universal healthcare makes healthcare affordable to all, but we need to understand in America, that if that happens, the way we experience healthcare will decline to what we are used to experiencing now as far as service, availability, and selection goes.
