I'd like to get my dad into RPGs, so what are some good turn-based games that won't bore him?

My first thought was Final Fantasy X. If that's too weeb for him, then Original Sin (on easy difficulty).

the first RPG that I can remember playing through was Lunar Legend.

I remember its mechanics being simple enough, and it having an enjoyable story.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy X

I think if you play 2 or 3 of those and don't like them at all then the genre isn't for you.

If someone can't get through pokemon, even with everything sped up and animations skipped, they shouldn't play turn based rpgs.

A Final Fantasy game. Easy and has fancy graphics. Wouldn't recommend Dragon Quest. It's classic but too classic. Might be too boring for a newcomer.

well while I think 10 is trash I do think it's a good introductory jrpg because how simple it is both in terms of progression and narrative

Persona 4 or Persona 5. They're both slow burns and bit on the easier side (relative to their franchise), but they're just punishing enough that you can't just rush everything. Assuming that's what you meant by "games that won't bore him," anyway.

I'd also recommend Fire Emblem on GBA or Fire Emblem Awakening if Strategy RPGs are on the table.

Persona 5, Final Fantasy 10 and Paper Mario TTYD are good ones. Final Fantasy 10 is a little dated with the random encounters though.

Oh shit you right. I wouldn't consider FFX either in that case considering it has unskippable cutscenes. Legit the one reason I never played it more than once.

Guys. A beginner RPG doesn't mean just any good RPG. It means one that's good AND easy to pick up and play if you're not familiar with the genre.

It also doesn't mean anyone's favorite outdated game they only like because of nostalgia

FFX is a pretty standard JRPG length at 30-40 hours or so. Persona is like...100. o.O

I can see certain bosses giving a JRPG newcomer some trouble though, Yunalesca is especially nasty if you're not prepared for their gimmick, so depending on how much trouble certain bosses give you the amount of cutscenes you'd have to sit through all over again will certainly add up to more than 40 hours. At least Persona lets you fastforward. But yeah that is actually a bit on the long side, I was just thinking from the perspective that they're not that difficult and easy to get the hang of. Persona 4 in particular was my introduction to the SMT franchise.

True, I wasn't thinking about the difficulty of some bosses. FFX was more or less my first, but I remember getting stuck on a boss and putting the game down for a long time.

By the time you get to the most difficult bosses in FFX the game has already given you the tools to handle it. They might catch you off guard the first time with their unique gimmicks but there was only one boss i couldnt handle as a kid and it was a straightforward boss with no gimmick Evray

Came to say this. Was my first jrpg. This or some final fantasy. 7 is a good choice its not hard and the mechanics wont confuse him unlike 8s junction system might. Id suggest 9 but the slow ass battle speed might be a turn off.

This.

Even with the sidequests, it maxes out at less than twenty hours. Probably has the most interesting/dynamic battle system of any of the easier RPGs out there.

Depends on the person I was bad about not thinking of how to beat bosses. So I got stuck a couple of timea in 10 because in previous games I was always able to just muscle my way through provided I was stocked on healing items or mp for curing magic.

I think 10 was the first 3D final fantasy to give me issues. Hell almost beat 8 with no junctions cause I couldnt be bothered to learn my first time lol.
