related to smoking in one day than all the deaths related to corona virus combined total. Yet no ban on smoking right. More probably died in traffic accidents today than corona virus but no ban on driving. More people died from the regular flu this winter than have even been infected with the corona virus worldwide.

Today I was informed I am effectively under house arrest by my HUD landlord here in New Hampshire. I can have no one over to visit even if health care related. There are three exits from the building but we can only enter through the front entrance even though the parking lot is in the rear. This means all the elderly residents get to walk a steep hill with lots of potholes and obstacles with any groceries (assuming we can get any). Although healthier than just about everyone in my building, I'm still struggling recovering from my amputation (left leg) and learning to use my peg leg. That hill may be my death sentence, I nearly fell earlier this winter when I had better balance. My game has been a bit off lately.

Seriously I get the whole danger of any disease, but this has gotten way out of control.

Sorry for the rant but it's been a really bad day and I can't get ahold of my daughter and grandson for some reason which adds to my already high stress/anxiety levels.

@wolfy42 If you weren't all the way on the other coast I seriously would try to help you

Smoking isnt contagious though. There is second hand smoking but as a society weve actually taken a lot of steps to try to diminish that. Even if you personally have a low chance of becoming seriously ill from covid-19 the raw number of vulnerable people is so high that everyone needs to take precautions to avoid spreading it and overwhelming the healthcare system.

yeah, it's never gonna catch up to motorvehicle deaths unless the whole world locks down on vehicles.... which is not sustainable because muh modern economies and logistical chains. UNLESS you really wanna turn the world into starvin marvin isolated villages.

Just to take MA for instance, all restaurants, bars and pubs are being closed to be inside. Many don't have a delivery option and many are laying off more than half their workers. For how little this is really a public menace, to affect so many economically is beyond unreasonable. There are so many other things our government needs to be doing rather than spread panic.

If they start shutting down casinos then our entire economy is basically on hold here.

How is it not a public menace? There's no immunity to it, and the worst cases put you in the hospital for a month, then if you survive, screws up your lungs for life. How many people do you know that can afford that?

The whole point of this reaction is because itll spread 10x as fast and kill faster than the hospitals can handle if we dont contain it. Its about controlling the chaos as much as possible because theyre still trying to figure out a cure

Thanks, I should be ok I hope. If I get it i'm screwed but I think I went shopping before it spread throughout my area (I hope).

I'm worried about my roomates getting it and bringing it here. I don't gg upstairs much, but they come down here to do laundry, and I do have to go upstairs sometimes to get mail and water for tea etc. I may just start using bottled water for my tea as well, and wear (sadly socks) to get my mail).

Not much else I can do. They closed down all indoor restraunts and non-grocery stores in my area. I have food for a few weeks at least (althougg there won't be much variety), so I hope I can just ride this out.

Sadly I have something wrong with my lungs/pneumonia or something, it's really bad when I first wake up so we thought it was acid reflux/GERD but yeah, it's consistent now, all day wet coughing and I need anti-biotics but no way I can risk going to the doctor/hospital, I'll just have to push through and hope it doesn't get much worse in the next few weeks.

Only really sucks for 30-40 minutes after I wake up, that is hell.

Other things kill people more it doesn't take away the threat of Coronavirus. Shit more people die from some form of an accident either in a vehicle or in their own home but that doesn't mean Coronavirus is nothing.

Smoking is also a choice and it takes a long fucking time to kill people it's not like you stick a cigarette in your mouth and smoke it and then 3 weeks later you're dead.

The stat I usually get is 440'000 die from tobacco related illness every year in the US.

Which means it would take 400 years of smoking to match the maximum killpower of COVID-19...

They are both dangerous, but they are also both containable.

i still dont understand how people like TC can exist. This is one of the most infectious diseases weve seen, and is massively disruptive to communities and local economies due to that insane rate of infection. Theres a graphic about how it compares in terms of mortality and infectiousness historically and its one of the worst in terms of combination of the two.

the problem is people who live under a rock who think this is no big deal or make the asinine argument that this is just another flu or say x diseases kills more people daily or x inanimate object kills more people but we dont freak out over x.

you are totally missing the point, the point is that this disease spreads like crazy. And in the process of spreading like crazy you might be fine and I might be fine (hence why most people think its just a flu) but what about your parents and grandparents?

I agree nobody needs to scaremonger and panic about this but at the same time really need to take the right precautions not just to protect yourself but to protect the elderly and vulnerable.

When Obama was president - 12,000 dead from H1N1 in the United States
He waited until 1000 people had died here, before he declared a national emergency
So what's the difference?

This shit spreads like wildfire, Ebola was a worse thing to get but it was super hard to transmit because once someone got Ebola they were dead in no time. Acting like the media is the only reason this is a major thing is dumber than shit.
