Just imagine what life was like during the Black Plague. No internet, no modern day medicine, doctors that still believed blood letting, and leeches were cure-alls, less law and order. And the damn thing rotted your flesh. Holy shit, that gives me the shivers. It basically wiped out millions.

Yeah most people know how deadly it is, not very deadly. However even a virus that most will survive can be very dangerous. How contiguous Covid9 is and how we have no real way to combat it is what makes it a problem. We will survive and it will move on but the damage will be done.

Yes the people treating it like the next black plague are wrong but so are the people trying to treat it like it's nothing.

Same. I was going to the gym daily, and doing stretches on the floor where everyone's sweat was, and shit. Once several positives came into my County, and over 100 in my state, I stopped.

The governor already shut the state down. I wasn't going to change my life just because of a little virus. The only reason I stopped is because they literally made it to where I can't do that stuff now. Which is why I'm trying to remember my netflix password lol

I think a more appropriate way of counting the bodies is to use percentage and ratios of infected to death.

We definitely have more people now then any given times in history. COVID-19 infected more people when compared to Ebola, MERS and SARS, of course it's going to kill more people despite a relatively low fatality. Smallpox keeps 30% of it's victim and maimed the survivor, so it's still reign supreme.

The Columbian Plague probably had the greatest fatality rate, but that was multiple diseases (bubonic plague, smallpox, measles, mumps, etc.) as opposed to just one, and there's still considerable disagreement as to how populated pre-Columbian America actually was(in other words, over how many people died from the spread of European diseases).

Seriously though. If people got through the Black Plague, then humans can get through anything.

Imagine a disease that turns your skin black and you vomit blood all the time. In those days you can't call 911 and there aren't doctors to tell you to just take this medicine. It wiped out millions of people without airplanes crisscrossing the planet.

The black death is only as bad as it is because it hit in a time when it was literally impossible to contain or combat it. Nowadays, cases still pop up, and basically nobody ever dies from it. Our ability to identify and treat it have grown substantially.

The Spanish flu hit in a time when everyones government was in full time war mode, and everyone was packed into trenches or factories, and medical supplies were in short supply.

Basically, our ability to respond to a virus matters a great deal more then the virus itself.

If we create conditions in which the virus is allowed to spread uncontested, it will be significantly worse. I mean this should be obvious to most people, but you still have fuckwits all over the place bragging about not social distancing and how unfair it is they cant go to their concerts next week. Take this thing seriously, and itll stay near the lower rungs. Treat it like a joke and youll start seeing the death toll rise substantially.

Never had heard of the Plague of Justinian before. given that it happened 800 years prior to Bubonic Plague it must have killed a pretty substantial portion of the world's population as well. I think if I had been alive for either of those I would have packed my bags and moved out into the middle of nowhere immediately. Extreme self isolation

I didn't realize SARS killed so little and swine flu killed so many(relatively speaking). I always thought they were about the same or that SARS was a little worse. I feel like I remember SARS being a pretty big deal back in the day so it only killing 770 people is kind of odd. I was also a little kid back then though so maybe my perception is off.

Coronavirus' death toll isn't even close to swine flu's and it already feels like a way bigger deal is being made out of it.

Exponential growth. Look at this logarithmic graph. Deaths increased tenfold in the last month in a half. Meaning that we could reach 1 million in 3 months if the rate stays the same.
