Because its absolutely nothing like a polio cure. Its just an experimental med that has extremely weak evidence that it might decrease the viral load, but not necessarily the duration or severity of illness. Infact, out of 26 patients that were in the group that got the medication, 4 of them had to be upgraded to the ICU, some of whom died. They chose not to include those people in the study. 1 patient left the hospital and another one couldn't take the med cuz of nausea. So their excluded those 6 from their stats.

Again, extremely weak evidence. Trump wants to give everyone false hope over this. I would leave talk about medications to the doctors tbh.

Our facility has taken a hard stance on hydroxychloroquine. We absolutely will not fill any prescriptions for it unless the patient has been on it for long term for things like arthritis or lupus. And even then only an absolute maximum of 30 days. The drug is out across the country, so we have to conserve it as much as possible.

As far as evidence, yeah I don't know what type of evidence there is in regards to COVID. I couldn't even find appropriate dosing information for the indication, so I couldn't even comfortably fill such a script anyway.

This is how it's like everywhere I think. I tried getting my mom a 90 day supply so we didn't have to go out once a month and they basically laughed.

I'm glad you feel the same. The evidence is so weak and it will rapidly deplete our current supplies for people that really need it RA/SLE.

University of Minneosta is doing a Post exposure ppx RCT right now, currently enrolling. I think that will be our best data. There is anecdotal data from asia that it works but I dont think we have the hard numbers on that.

The IDSA has a published article about hydroxychloroquine dosing for SARS-CoV-2. Only used in vitro apparently.

There's also some preliminary data out of France about the addition of azithromycin to hydroxychloroquine, but this hasn't been published.

Yeah, none of this is substantive. That's the whole problem - all the data out there is preliminary or in the case of the IDSA article, it only mentions in vitro activity.

i was reading that whole thing. that is exactly what it does. maybe if it had an effect on severity of symptoms it may be useful.

I'll go over the specific numbers later but yea as far as outcome goes, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

It's mind boggling how crazy everyone is going over this drug, they need to all calm down.. Laypersons shouldn't even think about it. With doctors and pharmacists, they need to actually read the study. I don't think how any MD or pharm D can read it and go "wow it works great".
