What game? I've never known a JRPG to take 70 hours, except for maybe 100% runs. They usually land somewhere between 20 and 40 hours.

Why wait? Just play a bit here and there till you beat it. I beat Persona 5 that way

I was just looking up Bravely Default: https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=14968

I usually go by the Main + Extras time. But I know that part of that is you have to play the game twice to get the true ending or something.

Still though, when I look into less mainstream and more weeb JRPGs, the hour count usually gets higher I find.

Persona 5 was like 200 hours for me. Never did I enjoy a game so much.

The longest JRPGs i played were FF7 and Xenogears. And I did take a fair amount of time exploring and doing side stuff.

I have trouble sticking with games if I don't play them continuously. So if I start switching around, there's a good chance it'll be abandoned.

That's why I haven't beaten Majora's Mask, Luigi's Mansion 2, Octopath Traveler, etc. Octopath in particular I started years ago. And with JRPGs, it can sometimes be difficult enough to make sense what's happening when you play it continuously, let alone with significant breaks. Although there was a year gap in my FF13 playthrough when I beat it lol.

Yeah that's my biggest problem with jrpgs. I burn out after 40 or 50 hours

The last JRPG that I beat was Super Mario RPG, sometime in 2017 or early 2018 when I was getting back into gaming. I didn't really enjoy it much tbh. I tried to play dragon quest 6 and I played it for about 10-12 hours without it ever really grabbing me so I quit. Then I played tales of destiny (can't remember if it was 1 or 2) I actually really enjoyed this one and got about 15 hours in but I got busy and when I tried to come back to it after a few weeks I forgot what was going on and lost interest.

It's just hard for me to imagine having the combination of free time and lack of other responsibilities to play jrpgs much any more

Yeah, a common criticism is that two chapters is just you redoing everything twice. The life hack is that youre supposed to completely skip all the side-quests in chapter 5 and 6 except for a single one (in the sages forest in 6) which cuts down like 5-8 hours of time.
I still wouldnt say its 65 hours though. Id say main + extra would be 50, maybe even 35 if you skip all the sidequests after a certain point (chapter 4)

50-70 hours feels pretty standard to me for a JRPG. I'm not surprised when they go beyond that, like Persona or Dragon Quest.

And then we have the Xenoblade games where you can easily spend hundreds of hours playing...especially X and 2.

Back when I was younger and money was more of a limiting factor, hour count was pretty important and I would be happy with a very long JPRG. But these days, I'd rather have a focused 15-20 hour experience because I'm more limited by time than money.

But some of my favorite childhood games are JRPGs. So I think "I want to try Xenoblade Chronicles."

When an RPG hits the 50 hour mark and the story is still going on I begin to feel burnt out.

I liked Persona 5, Dragon Quest XI, and Tales of Vesperia, but I wanted them to be over long before they actually were.

See I dunno. The last JRPG I really enjoyed was persona 4 which may have legit taken me over 100 hours with limited goofing around. I just don't think I'll ever have that time again

Very rarely are long games fulfilling the entire way through.

Ill take Max Payne 1 500 times over a 500 hour empty fetch quest/grinding game.

It just depends. Between my two playthroughs of BotW I have 165 hours logged. But you can beat it whenever you feel like if you start to get bored, and it's kind of ideal for getting back into after not playing for a year because of how little story there is to keep track of.

I just checked A Hat in Time because Seal the Deals death wishes had me spent 50+ hours due to the sheer difficulty and it said seal the deal takes 8 hours for completionist which definitely doesnt take into account the difficulty (I spent 8 hours on (the hardest) 1 out of 37 missions alone).
So I checked Touhou to see if it did the same for that and LOL
https://howlongtobeat.com/game?id=36378

Are there any games with a bigger discrepancy than that?

Additionally, JRPGs are at a uniquely high risk for me quitting late game, since final dungeons are often extremely tedious and full of bullshit enemies that kill you easier than the final boss. At least the older ones, maybe that's changed in recent years.

I do this thing where I buy RPGs, don't start them until 6 months - 3 years later, and then only play them for a week or two before picking up a different game

I think I spent five months beating FF7, and I only put like 40 hours in it lol

Back when Xenoblade was new, I played it over the summer when I was on break from college and I legit put 140 hours into it over two weeks

I'll never have that level of free time again until I retire
