sounds like great parenting.Yes, because a 20 minute speech, where the kid is guaranteed to zone out after 2 minutes, on the virtues of behaving, followed by 10 minutes on the time-out step is sure to make them never to throw the basketball in the house again. --- Some people say I'm not patient. and to hide their behaviors from their parents, creating a second identity if you will My brother and I got spanked. The worst would be a belt across the hands but we were never beaten. Spanking alone doesn't solve anything. Unless the parent has structure in the first place the child will not learn from any form of discipline.

I use a 3 strike system that works like a charm.
1. Tell them to stop doing the thing. 2. Yell at them to stop doing the thing. 3. Spank them. Very soon it never reaches strike 3 and barely ever reaches strike 2 because the fear of strike 3 is enough to deter the bad behavior, plus by then they KNOW theyre misbehaving and still choosing to do it, so they know exactly why it is happening. --- ... There need to be the right punishments for the right thing. If you spank at every mistake, you're a shitty parent and it will not be effective. You need to punish light mistakes lightly (words), make sure the kid deserved it when you do and give it punishments related to their mistakes. Spanking would come in for very bad things so that the kid will learn to fear it and understand that it did a very bad thing.
