There's easily over a million people infected in the US. There's just not enough tests to prove it.

Well yeah, the more people have it, the faster it spreads. It's gonna be 500k very soon.

Getting harder and harder for the doomsday deniers to say shit. It really needs to be put on some serious spotlight soon so we can get that lockdown running

Well the predictive modeling would have it at 300,000 today. So idk. Crappy reporting I'm guessing.

That would be pretty close, but, of course, there are probably lots of unconfirmed cases because we're so short on testing capability.

I hope more places do the right thing and put stronger limits in place/breaking up groups of people. I'm still surprised on how many state leaders are doing squat because they think Trump will fix it somehow and/or think "its just the flu".

The more deadly and quick acting a virus is, the less it spreads.

That is an outlier because the main vector for infection is flea to human, so it doesn't have the risk of killing the host too fast and too successfully to slow the spread.

Before the plague evolved to survive inside of fleas, it was basically a non factor to humans because it was so deadly and quick.

Dealing with something like this as poorly as we are will lead to doomsday. America isn't really built to be able to execute an effective lockdown either. Other countries managed to deal with it either through an authoritarian rule or just a generally better educated group of citizens. If you look at a place like Italy as a benchmark for what'll happen to the US at a much greater scale, we're pretty fucked.

Maybe doomsday is a bit of a trigger word for you, but maybe we need to look at it as if it's a doomsday scenario. We're not getting out of this easily

We're already under a pretty severe lock down. I don't see how it can get worse.

Over a thousand people died in the last 24 hours. That scares me more than the actual cases since most will be fine. But when you look at countries like Italy, when they reach their peak they tend to lose the same amount of people each day. If we haven't even reached our peak yet, imagine when we do what that number will be. It's fucking scary. Is it out of the question that 3 weeks from now we will lose 3000 people a day for weeks and weeks?

Just the more I think about things, the more I am happy I am in a position where I can stay home. I don't have a big house or a lot of shit to do, but I rather stay here then risk getting my family sick or even infecting someone I don't know.

You should be happy. Most Americans don't have that luxury and I'm pretty sure with 6.6 million jobless people, corporations have all the power to keep staff in line.

In NYC, the subways are still full during rush hour. Everyone is an essential worker.

In a weird sort of way, my dad dying probably saved my family. He was sick enough that if he caught this, he would have died. Leukemia, diabetes, overweight, heart troubles, he would have been fucked. We were thankful he died peacefully when he did because there would have been a lot of suffering in his life if he were still here regardless of this virus. Now my family is in a position where I can stay home for years and years thanks to his life insurance. Thankfully it won't come to that, but it's comforting to know that even in death that my father ended up helping us.

This is basically one of the reasons Ebola outbreak never got very far and also why rabies isn't more common.

Where I worked before they let go of the rotating PA trainees, if your dad had covid and was dying from it, they'd let one loved one see him per day. So only his wife could see him one day, then she'd have to leave and the kid could see him the next day and so forth. It was heart wrenching to tell people that.
