So I decided to place an order at my local seafood restaurant. I was checking the menu and saw they have online ordering. I was going to order and pick up. I got toward the end telling me to confirm my order. I see my total was WAY HIGHER than I expect and these people put a 20% tip as the default tip amount. 20%! Im not going inside and getting service! Im picking it up from a Drive Through! I didnt even know you could add a tip online! They didnt even ask me about it until I was at the very last screen to confirm my 20% tip! Such BS!

Do you guys tip going through drive throughs? How much you guys tip in general at restaurants? I dont think Ive ever tipped 20+% outside of one tip with fantastic service. I typically tip between 7-10%

Thats fair. I typically dont eat out since this has started. I could have tipped 20% but I was insulted that they tried to sneak it in there. Adding a tip should be my choice. I shouldnt have a 20% tip by default unless I change it.

I tipped 40% when I ordered food the other night. It's a rough time for everyone right now, might as well help out where I can, even if it's just tipping more than I Normally do.

Would you have done that if they put a 40% tip on your order by default without asking you?

20% is considered an average tip and most businesses push that as the standard. There is usually a lower tier option or a custom option if you don't like that.

Just because you believe 7-10% should be the norm does not mean the rest of the world has to.

Also, they didn't sneak it in, they asked before you confirmed. If they were sneaking it in, you never would have been notified at all or at any point.

I'd it is delivery I normally tip my driver 5 dollars, during this if I ordered out it would probably be 10.

I dont consider that asking. I want it to be clear that you are asking for a tip and let m pick my tip amount. Ive never seen a restaurant add their recommended tip in on your total. That should be my choice. It feels like someone taking $20 out my wallet then come up to me and ask if they can borrow that $20. Im not cool with that. Its the principle.

So do I. Bringing my food to my house is an extra service. All they are doing is preparing it. That isnt anything different from McDonalds.

I wouldn't use, "the rest of the world" as your rebuttal. Given the fact that a great deal of the world arent fond of tip culture.

Also making someone tip 20% or not all shouldnt be a thing.

Normally I dont tip for takeout but when I order now I'm giving atleast 20%. During these times it may be the difference in them actually being able to stay open.

The only time weve eaten outside he home since coronavirus was March 31. A local Mexican restaurant put together a limited item menu and put it on their website. Free delivery.

We bought a family meal. Fajitas (chicken and beef) for four (including 16 homemade tortillas), all the fixings (lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, guacamole and sour cream) refried beans and rice (probably 16 oz containers x2), chips with salsa, queso and a jalapeo cream dip of some kind. Then two cheeseburgers with fries for the kids. All $50 plus tax. I paid $80 with tip. We just finished the last of the food yesterday evening for dinner.

Thats money well spent. And its a place my wife and I have frequented for our date night we started doing once a week before the quarantine. If that keeps them open through all of this, its well worth the $30 extra.

I find it hard to believe that 20% is the average tip. Sure businesses would LIKE it to be the standard, but would definitely need a credible source before I believe that to be the average. Unless we're counting rich people's crazy goodwill 5000% tips on a cup of coffee that you hear about sometimes to raise the average, I'm thinking the average tip is about 15%.

That's generally the average that people go by. Like...its most likely very common but people also think that a 5 dollar tip is a big deal too. You either have people who pay 20%, people who tip very little, maybe even a dollar or 2? Or people who tip 5 thinking its a big tip(no matter what they order). I can get a 50 dollar table and I'm still given 5 dollars even though they push me to do so much work for it.

I won't complain. I make my tips through multiple tables rather than worrying about getting big tips from one table. I try to spread myself to cover everyone so everyone gets the same amount of service.

lmfao, that's a really fucked up way to view that. Seriously. They notified you BEFORE you purchased. Whether they wait at the beginning or end makes no difference. The hell is wrong with you?

I sort of get where he's coming from. A lot of places give you a subtotal for your 'cart' early on. It'd be nice to have that there rather than added later on.
But during these times I'd still say that's not asking much

In a small way, I kind of get how it makes him feel, but to outright say it's an attempt at theft is just laughable.

also i understand making a making a bit of an exception for covid19, but under normal circumstances you don't tip for takeout. People don't deserve a tip for placing your food in a container and handing it to you. Are you going to tip the girl at burger king too?

The only thing that annoys me about places calculating the tip for you is when they include things that shouldn't be tipped on.

Like Jimmy John's includes the delivery fee in the tip calc.
