WASHINGTON Black Americans are overwhelmingly dying of coronavirus at much higher rates compared to other Americans in some major cities, but most federal officials and states are not keeping track or releasing racial data on coronavirus victims, raising concerns about care for the nation's most vulnerable populations.

With coronavirus cases and related deaths soaring in cities with significant black populations, including New Orleans, Detroit and New York, civil rights groups, Democratic lawmakers and the White House have all called on federal health officials to release racial data to ensure resources and information are reaching every community affected by the outbreak.

60% of New Orleans population is black. Chicago has the same 70% of deaths and black people make up 30% of population there.

60% black in New Orleans, 55% black in Baton Rouge and 56% black in Shreveport. Those are the three most populous cities in Louisiana, so this makes sense.

I've seen some stuff mentioning this, but it isn't surprising. The people who are least likely to be able to afford testing or treatment are being hit hardest. It's really more of a socioeconomic issue, but America's history has made race & social status highly intertwined.

Why though?
Unfortunate reality, percentage wise, it likely has to do with lower income households comprising of a) poor access to health care and b) the inability to stay at home for financial reasons (assuming they're working at an essential job) which just goes back to the work and financial structure of this country. Most of "non big city" deaths seem to be coming out of the South, which does typically have fairly large African American communities, especially in the smaller towns. So basically, everything African American people were saying while others chanted "All Lives Matter!" is now showing itself to the world, right in its face (No, I'm not saying that's the only or even majority reason but you're playing yourself if you deny its not contributing)

Yeah, New Orleans is about 60% black and 34% white so if the vast majority of the cases are in New Orleans then it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. In Illinois, where the vast majority of cases are in and around Chicago, there have been 163 black deaths and 137 white deaths which may be a better example of the lower socio-economic standards at play.

I don't think anyone is going to suggest the virus is racist; rather, these are the inevitable results of a respiratory disease transmittable between humans in a country where black people
1) tend to live in more densely populated areas
2) tend to live in areas with higher air pollution (see A: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/nidhisubbaraman/epa-environmental-justice-air-pollution
And B: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/07/climate/air-pollution-coronavirus-covid.html)
3) are disproportionately poorer and more likely to be working jobs that can't be done from home

2 and 3 there are byproducts of racism that make African Americans more vulnerable to dying from coronavirus

It would help if they would take this quarantine seriously too. I agree with Antifar's post above too. We have a lot of health issues and vulnerabilities that put us at a high risk of catching it. It doesn't help that people still want to go hang out at the park or go to people's houses.

I haven't heard anyone call it racist. A lot of what I said came from other black people. Being in apartment buildings don't really help much with the social distancing though unfortunately. I think that'll raise the risk of many minorities, college students and lower income households.

I'm sure Mardi Gras had a hand in the early outbreak in Louisiana as well.

Apartments are fine for social distancing. They're nothing compared to the skyscrapers in NYC where you have to take the elevator down and up 30 floors with multiple other people.

This.

So that's..

-Distrust towards power.
-Pre-existing health conditions that are already rampant in African-American communities.
-More likely to live in heavily populated areas.
-Receiving poor health care for a variety of reasons.
-Living conditions are unhealthier due to pollution.
-Working jobs that are less likely to default to working from home.

So a lot of reasons that stem from systemic racism, but just enough other reasons for old white guys to put full accountability upon such communities.

Shit really sucks.

Why else would black communities be ignoring social distancing orders en masse?

I guess not giving a fuck could be an answer, but the most logical response would be a lack of trust towards the government. Perhaps mirroring the potential response from republicans had a democrat been in power during the response.

It's all conjecture but it's not like my ass is going into the hood and asking people why they're not social distancing.

I don't think it has to do with race, but more socioeconomic background. It's already well established that socioeconomic status is a major determinant of health. Also I think that number is misleading because Louisiana is probably closer to 50/50 if not more than 50% black in big cities
