The measure being mandated is being used by the government not to actually stop the virus but to be used as a visual reminder of social distancing. The cloth protection being required is not able to stop the virus, as only the masks being explicitly excluded and reserved for medical personnel is designed and capable to do just that.

The cloth ones are better than nothing, which is most people's only alternative to actual N95 masks. Nothing isn't working well enough, so it's time to start demanding something stronger. The psychological aspect of it - that is, seeing people in masks reminds you to keep away from them, as well as the simple act of putting on a mask to go outside prompts you to consider whether or not you really need to - is just a bonus, really.

Actually it is correct, the video I posted (I'll post it again) a doctor says the same (starts at 7:25 where he explains how the virus is transmitted, and also the discusses a mask for not touching your face at 12:00).

I haven't started covering my face although I don't go out much and it's not hard for me to do so. It shouldn't be hard for anyone to be honest. It doesn't need to be a surgical mask.

I mean, I just linked a video and stated exact points where a respected doctor states why to wear a mask. This guy is on the frontlines working with COVID19 patients.

I don't understand the pushback on this one. You can even read through the YouTube comments, there are people thanking him for the video.

I'm not looking things up and posting em, but there are tons of other doctors and respected people in the fields that have said it is passed through the air primarily. I've watched more then a few videos on it.

I'm certainly not saying you can't get it from touching stuff and then your face etc, but enough people have said it's primarily passed through the air, to at least take any precautions you can, and a mask helps prevent the spread (as posted above by reducing particles that are released into the air etc).

The info on the virus is all over the place, some people are still saying 6 feet is enough and have rules/laws enforcing that, others say 21 feet is the bare minimum to make a difference etc. Honestly it doesn't really matter, common sense states wearing a mask will at least help prevent you passing anything on to other people (Even common colds etc) so wearing one should be a no brainer, unless you the president of course.

I have looked things up, and posted them for you.

If you have anything from a doctor that backs up what you're saying, I'm willing to watch it. But at this point, I've been the only one here to provide a reputable source. Everything you are saying is just that: you.

And while you may be a great poster and friendly guy, if you don't have anything to back up your claims I'm going with the doctor on this one. It's funny you make fun of the president, but you are just as unwilling as him to listen to other viewpoints. You are no better than Trump.

Awful idea. The shortages are widely publicized and now this. I say no. It's not like the air is poisonous as the media wants you to believe. Avoid sickies and it's fine. And it's not as if they work 100% or are worn properly.

Here are a few things that directly state you can get it through the air, and in fact that is what the WHO thinks is the primary method of it spreading.

which talks both about how you can get the virus through the air, and other virus's that have a similar contractability and instances in the past where people have been infected across a full football stadium from 1 person.

There are tons of articles etc out there talking about contagion through the air.

Why don't we wear masks all the ttme you ask? Because the risk wasn't great enough to warrant the discomfort. There are places in the world where wearing masking is far more common though.

A decent number of doctors believe this virus is spread primarily through the air, and coughing freely out into the air is the easist way to pass it to others. Many believe just walking through and area someone with the virus was in, is enough to pass it on.

If you don't believe that, good for you, but it doesn't mean it's not true, we don't know for sure one way or another, there is evidence that shows you can get it from at least 21 feet away thoogh.

Ooops forgot to mention the doctor starts primarily talking about air born viruses and this being spread through the air at about 14 minutes in (otherwise it would take forever to get to that part...well 14 minutes is forever for me lol).

Provided you can identify them, sure. But there's this little thing called "asymptomatic transmission" that kind of renders that approach completely impossible. Even for the symptomatic ones, you aren't generally going to know that they're symptomatic until they cough, at which point you're potentially in range for transmission.

You can find articles saying this thing can only be transmitted by physical contact. Heck, you can find articles saying this thing is caused by 5G networks (albeit significantly less reputable ones). This virus is uncharted territory and new things are being discovered about it on a near-daily basis. Nothing (plausible) is really off the table, even if you can find reputable articles saying that there's no reason to suspect it. Even a week or two can render such articles outdated as new evidence emerges.

True enough, but I'm not gonna fall for the panic hype. You can't trust much when it changes every friggin day and as long as I work outside I'm not terribly concerned. Indoors would be different.

In order to know if you've ever been wrong, you need the capacity to admit it--something that Mead and his ilk are utterly incapable of since their arguments usually ends up with what's written in my sig. If we're learning anything from self-quarantine, there are plenty of ways to have food and other goods delivered directly to your house, and it's possible to work from home, so in theory you could spend the next 20+ years never once leaving your house and survive just fine.

I mean, the "panic hype" here amounts roughly to "tie an old t-shirt over your mouth and nose if you're going outside." Even if they figure out by next week that what seems like evidence of airborne spread from breathing is actually droplets from somebody else sneezing and conclude that the masks are no longer necessary, you haven't exactly lost much by heeding the recommendations. And if it turns out that they're right, you've potentially saved yourself (and, by extension, many people around you) from infection. Nothing to lose, a reasonable chance of considerable gain, why not go for it?

Yep. Being an expert doesn't change that this is an unfamiliar, rapidly-evolving situation. That their recommendations and findings have changed doesn't mean they don't know what they're talking about, it means there's new information available that has changed their opinion. It certainly doesn't mean that you should be disregarding what they say in favour of your own assessment of the situation, given that your assessment is based on incomplete data sets and little to no genuine medical knowledge.

And that has what to do with FEARMONGERING, you goddamned hack!? You can try to argue that republicans are just plain misinformed about the virus but they are far from spreading fear.
