They were going to surrender before we even dropped the first one. One of the worst moments in American history imo

This is true. They were ready to give up. I dunno personally if it was before the first? But i have myself read after the first they were done.

Truman said he never even felt bad about ordering it, at all. Mind blowing. Makes me sad thinking about it.

Is this a serious post? The Japanese were committing far worse atrocities themselves at the time. They killed at least 10x more people than what the bombs killed and for many in far more gruesome and fucked up ways.

Doesn't make killing civilians en masse justifiable and not a fucking war crime.

The Nazis were, well, the Nazis, but that doesn't justify what the US did to Hamburg and Dresden.

I agree, but mass slaughtering of civilians is another level. Japanese soldiers were brutal, commited torture and war crimes. But we also nuked and fire bombed their cities and burned non combatants to death horribly.

I have never liked the concept of 'total war'. I didnt like it when the North did it to the South during the American revolution, i didnt like it when we bombed Nagasaki and Hiroshima, and I didnt like it during Vietnam. War is always ugly but for fucks sake, you cant become the monster you are trying to destroy.

The rape of Ninjing alone is worse than anything allied forces did during the war and the Japanese did many more things just as bad as that.

As for dropping the bombs being war crimes, nah I don't agree. The Japanese and Germans established early on that attacking civilian populations was fine. And it's not like the nukes were dropped on random goat herders or farmers. The nukes were dropped on major manufacturing areas that are apart of the war effort.

Proving to Japan we had the power to destroy entire cities was an important factor in making them shut the fuck up about their terms. They lost. They didn't get to dictate the terms of their surrender.

Because the leadership didn't even want to surrender after the second bomb.

Japan spent the last months of WWII communicating with the Soviets trying to convince them to broker a peace deal that would be favorable to Japan. And if that didn't work they hoped the potential casualties of a mainland invasion would convince the Americans instead.
