So there was some freaky shit going down, right? Like, explosions, or maybe some rocks magically appeared or people started dreaming shit. Idk.

Anyways I set out to discover the aeon-dead secrets of the inescapable madness, which is so inescapable and of such mad portent that humans cannot comprehend it.

And it turns out to be a bunch of weird people worshipping aliens. I knew about these aliens because the M A D A R A B wrote about it in a book that was made with like, human flesh or something. But even though he mentioned it, he didnt dare write about the shocking horrific terrible insanity that I witnessed!

Turns out they tried to summon an alien. And then I fell in a hole and fell asleep and woke up in a weird place, like, the ocean or something. And I saw the non-Euclidean bas-relief upon the Cyclopean monoliths and learned the truth, the truth too unspeakable to be bespoke, but bespeak I shall! The completely indescribably HORROR, I shall describe in intricate detail! Its pretty fucked up!

And anyways, I went back home after the cultists buggered off and I thought I was safe. But I wasnt safe! Because the alien old forgotten aeon-dead entities stalked me to my apartment, and then i died!

Humanity is doomed, but can take solace in its ignorance, for if they could comprehend the form of their destruction, then, idk, theyd be scared or shit.

Those weird people, by the way? The were in-bred southerners and blacks. HP Lovecraft will describe how weird and primitive they are for 12 paragraphs.

(Extremely accurate OP, though)

You forgot about saying all the native people in each area look exactly like various animals, usually fish

Also not enough bas-reliefs

Well he also thinks rural new englanders are mutants too.

Dreamquest is my favorite thing of his.

I think its cool that this lovecraft guy played some game called bloodborne or something, and made a lot of fan fiction based on it.

Still a damn fine writer.

I do love most of his work. But I love making fun of things I love almost as much as I love the actual stuff.

The fact that he was a flaming racist just makes it that much more satisfying to take the piss

He starts every fucking story by saying he saw some terrible crazy shit that he dare not relive or the thoughts will drive him to madness, and then goes on to relive it in great detail.

I was about to reply with something in a similar vein.

Considering his mother used to dress him in his deceased, syphilitic fathers clothes, I am not surprised his fiction came out rather wonky.

Tfw your writing is so dense you could turn just one chapter of At the Mountains of Madness into a movie trilogy.

like fuck, I want to see alien octopus dragons fight abominable mushroom-crab snowpeople from Pluto, and reclaim their sacred home ground form the spawn of Cthulu

I used to be obsessed with his stuff and looking back yeah you nailed it with the OP. It can get tired.
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is still my favorite horror story though and i think it would make an *excellent* HBO mini series or something.

The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is one of his best. And I agree it could make for a great TV adaptation. I think the only one I'd put over it is The Colour Out of Space.

@FuneralFroth

That shit is full of some bonkers ass gems that, to this day, scare the hell out of me. It is a very bloated story and the first two chapters can probably be deleted if he had an editor because the gratuitous architectural wanking is second only to The Festival, which stops every time it's getting creepy to describe gable rooftops.

1: The entire sequence where the lookout observes the siege of the farm with instructions to wait for the various degrees of "we're fucked" signals. It is paced perfectly. This might be my favorite set piece in all his writing.

2: The Dr exploring the catacombs and all of the Necromantic stuff he finds is very unsettling. I'm thinking in particular of the things "that like to eat but don't need to" locked for hundreds of years in cylindrical holes with grates.

3: The Orne Letters are creepy as hell.

4: How could I forget the fucking thing that escaped and died by the river. Jesus that chapter.

Lovecraft: Theres this sort of deity/demi-god/cosmic being that has a lot of tentacles, multiple eyes, and its like huge. Its so scary.

Giant tentacles & multiple eyeballs are pretty scary, but what else about it is scary? Can you describe what it looks like more in detail

Lovecraft: Its so terrifying its almost indescribable. Like its so scary that gazing upon it & trying to comprehend what youre witnessing would cause you to lose your mind. If I were to describe it you -truly describe it you, your human mind would not be able to handle it.

But what else besides the tentacl-

Lovecraft: Its too spooky!

The Festival basically memes this and it's a shame because the ending paragraph is so chilling in context of the story.

So I read again that hideous chapter, and shuddered doubly because it was indeed not new to me. I had seen it before, let footprints tell what they might; and where it was I had seen it were best forgotten. There was no onein waking hourswho could remind me of it; but my dreams are filled with terror, because of phrases I dare not quote. I dare quote only one paragraph, put into such English as I can make from the awkward Low Latin.

The nethermost caverns, wrote the mad Arab, are not for the fathoming of eyes that see; for their marvels are strange and terrific. Cursed the ground where dead thoughts live new and oddly bodied, and evil the mind that is held by no head. Wisely did Ibn Schacabao say, that happy is the tomb where no wizard hath lain, and happy the town at night whose wizards are all ashes. For it is of old rumour that the soul of the devil-bought hastes not from his charnel clay, but fats and instructs the very worm that gnaws; till out of corruption horrid life springs, and the dull scavengers of earth wax crafty to vex it and swell monstrous to plague it. Great holes secretly are digged where earths pores ought to suffice, and things have learnt to walk that ought to crawl.
