Papa S. was still mentally sharp and vibrant but was ravaged by a staph infection which attacked his surgically repaired back. He fought hard but started slipping this week and my father drove up to see him off. Sadly, there were heavy visiting restrictions due to the pandemic.

He was in a lot of pain the past few years but coped by painting as he has his entire life. He taught art at a university for forty years, gaining tenure without so much as a bachelor's degree.

Born into a Jewish family, he eschewed the orthodoxy to marry a gentile and abandoned the faith. At some point this week I will try to get shellfish and bacon to celebrate in his rebellious leanings and perhaps start drawing. Now, we grieve.

Rip Papa S.

Sorry dude. I lost all my grandparents. Its tough every day.

I'm sorry to hear that. I will miss his advice. The past couple of years he got on me for drifting (his words) and wasting my life (not his words). I only wish he could have seen me flourish.

My dad died last year at 78.

Feels like the end of the world, but the world just keeps on spinning.

I hope you find peace with their deaths. Give it time.

Thank you for your condolences, everyone. I am not taking it too hard because I was prepared the past few weeks. It will be different when I enter that house, however. He designed a beautiful wooden beam home in a rural area near a lake. I had secretly dreamed of buying it one day. That seems impossible now.

First dead body I ever touched was my dad.

Grandpa died in 1995

Grandma died in 2003

And I had aunts and uncles to pass away, but death truly only hit home when I lost my dad and I was touching him and hugging him until the lid was closed on his casket.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad a few months ago, and I literally felt like life could not go on without him. Now I can fondly look back on my time with him and not have that feeling that dread. It's always tough to lose someone close to you, but stay strong and that pain will wane and be replaced with joy over the time you got to spend with him.

It won't do much to help anyone cope with loss, but celebrating someone's memory through bacon is an awesome idea.
