Just most cops I see when setting up speed traps are hiding their vehicles so that you can't see them generally until it is too late to stop. Hell in Georgia they had lines of trees in between cross over roads between highways where they would tuck in. If you are slowing down for that cop, you are hitting your brakes when you see them.

The person who speeds more is inherently unsafer. The person who doesn't pay attention is inherently unsafer than the person who does.

You are just arguing which is a degree of safer or not at that point.

You should usually be in the rightmost lane assuming not a turning lane ofc, unless you are making a pass or preparing for an exit/turn or it is marked for certain vehicles.

That just means you are not being alert enough. If you see a line of trees in which a police cruiser could be hiding, slow down. If you are coming up to the top of a hill and can't see over it, there could be a police car waiting right on the other side so slow down. If you are driving in a state you aren't familiar with, exercise extra caution. If you are being alert, you can avoid 99% of speed traps.

I guess it depends on how intentionally sneaky these speed traps are. If Georgia is like that, I guess this wouldn't hold up so well there. But my main point is that alertness is a bigger deal than an extra 20 mph of speed.

I don't agree. I tend not to speed much. Sometimes it happens without realizing it. I might match speed of cars up to 5 over on long trips.

But the whole up and down speeding game you are talking about doesn't sound very safe.

Being alert is safe. Being alert of the hiding spots around you for when you could sneak in speeding doesn't seem like the best use of your alertness.

I've found this depends on the area/type of highway.

In rural areas (geographically most of the country) with a 2 or 3 lane highway, this is mostly true. In a highway closer to a city with lots of entrances and exits, it's often impractical to just stay in the rightmost lane since the highway gains and loses lanes frequently. It's also often less safe because the right lane always has people entering and leaving the highway and so is more prone to accidents if it's very crowded. Most often in these situations I think what makes most sense is to pick one of the middle lanes and stay there until you reach a less crowded area or have a reason to merge--for example if your exit is in a few miles. (Though, I would say the general guidelines of "pass on the left" and "slower traffic further to the right" would still apply. I just don't think it's any longer "always drive in the rightmost lane")

well yeah, there are scenarios where you should stay in the middle lane. if there's an entrance you should be in the middle lane to give the drivers on the entrance the opportunity to enter the highway. so if there's a bunch of entrances in a row, you should stay in the middle lane. similarly, if there's a long line of trucks in the right lane for some reason, you should also stay in the middle lane to pass all of them.

just saying that you shouldn't be in the middle lane for a long period of time for no particular reason - that's what i've been taught, at least. still find it pretty weird that jakyl was apparently taught otherwise!

The logic was entirely based on having the most possible escape options in case of an oncoming accident

Also where I live theres an on ramp every 3 to 5 miles so thats another reason staying in the right lane isnt practical

I don't disagree, but what I'm trying to get across is that there are some highways for which there are enough particular reasons not to be in the right lane at all normal times of day such that not being in the right lane becomes the norm. Most relevantly, this is true for crowded interstates near cities (especially 3-digit ones) where there are 40 mile stretches of road with 4+ lanes and an exit every 1-2 miles.

United States has 13300 in serious or critical across the nation right now. I think the highest another nation had was 8k at their peak. Where New York got the 40k number for themself is very questionable. That likely was a panic request.
