I liked Pandora when it launched but then it just kept playing four songs by the same five artists no matter what I tried so I had to quit. Streamed my own music for the longest time (and still bought CD's), finally caved in to Spotify last year.

I had the same issue with Pandora. Amazon seems to be missing a lot of stuff that I like. Haven't really tried the others outside of Apple but only because I have CD's uploaded to iTunes on laptop.

Yeah I hate that Amazon has three tiers of availability - Not available (have to pay), available on Prime, or available on Amazon Music Unlimited. And then if you do want to pay, to own the music, which I did, they added some extra steps for no reason.

For my own music collection I always used Google Play, it was just easier, especially since I have an Android music player and can just download what I want to it for offline listening, lot easier than having to worry about trying to find it across my harddrives any more.

See I have the opposite problem - Pandora seems to be the only streaming platform the recommends me music or artists I am not already familiar with. So I usually use Spotify for general listening but use Pandora when I'm looking for new tunes.

Yeah like I have Amazon Prime already for the streaming service, so I have access to the "2nd tier" of Amazon music through Prime, but I still have to subscribe to "Amazon Unlimited" in addition to get everything, it's like a middle finger to Amazon customers haha

Vinyl was making a huge comeback a few years ago. There's something about owning the album jacket with the cover artwork that adds to the experience.

It is kind of interesting, there's a Swedish band I listen to called Kent; they went their separate ways a few years ago and apparently some of their CDs went out of print, at least temporarily. I saw on Amazon that one of the CDs was selling for hundreds of dollars, but the vinyl version was like 20 bucks.

Spotify. It has a great selection. My only gripe is that it's curating functions are super lazy.

For general listening, go with Spotify. If you love discovering new music Amazon is the way to go.

Is it possible to upload music to Spotify?

I keep running into them having the song I want but the wrong version, want to put up the correct ones.

I'm aware I'm probably missing something super obvious.

Vinyl is still actually going pretty strong tbh. I only buy albums when its something where Id want to sit down and listen to the whole thing though, you know? Most artists these days put out records with two, maybe three good singles on em. So Im pretty selective about what I get physical copies of.

I still maintain a library of downloaded music through iTunes, and listen to that on shuffle most days... But I still use Spotify as well. Typically I use Spotify to explore/listen to new music, and then, if I like it enough, I'll buy/download it via iTunes store, bandcamp, beatport, wherever.

I used to keep a pretty big iTunes catalog but it just became too much of a hassle to maintain, especially when updating iTunes would randomly do things like remove album artwork or split albums in half for no reason. I felt like I was doing more gardening than actual listening to music. And if Im gonna make a hobby out of organizing a music catalog Id rather do it with vinyl, I think. Feels better to me, and less frustrating.

Yeah, that's fair. iTunes has some seriously frustrating quirks that I've learned to work around... I have occasionally sought out alternatives, but so far I haven't found any that can reasonably match iTunes' playlist-creation tools.

I make heavy use of the smart playlist feature; for example, I realized a year or so ago that out of my library of ~4500 songs rated 4 or 5 stars, only about 1000 of them had a play count of 20+, and significantly fewer had made it to 40+. So I made a playlist of all songs with a 4 or 5 star rating, but less than 20 play count, and by using that playlist I've re-discovered a ton of music that I had loved at one point, but just happened to forget about.

Also, iTunes is really nice about adding music from external sources (i.e. not bought through their store) to your library. Whereas, the last time I checked, Spotify isn't too great about integrating non-Spotify music into playlists and such.

EDIT: Forgot to mention -- while iTunes' handling of music metadata is sometimes weird and counter-intuitive, it's also really flexible and allows me to modify almost any data field. Since I use last.fm pretty religiously, having control over the song tags is really important, and iTunes allows me to do that.

I actually forgot to mention my favorite part of Spotify, compared with other streaming services, its recommendations based on my history/playlists are SPOT ON a majority of the time, if not all the time. Other services have advantages over Spotify in some regards but Spotify from my experience has been the best at recommending artists I may have never heard before.
