Is pushing a popular policy a way to win elections and get said policy implemented?

No? He'd still need friends/allies in Congress which he's gone out of his way to avoid.

Do you see that as the primary way our current congress has been put in place?

what's the point in complaining about Biden at this point when he's secured the nomination? im not saying he doesnt deserve it, but spreading anti-Biden messages at this point will only help Trump. people on the left need to rally behind biden instead of fracturing our base.

It seems that "centrist" democrats are pretty much just more honest about what realistically can be done.

That argument seems deceptive and manipulative to me. Joe Bidens platform is a grab bag of ideas that are popular with Democratic voters. But Democratic voters don't dictate the agenda of the Senate. Even if Democrats took it over, which they very likely will not, the number of conservative senators makes the math on most of his plans just as impossible.

Like you can use reconciliation for a few things. But if you're committed to the Senate rules like Biden has stated he is, 45 votes is just as useless as 25 or w/e

"Holding Democrats accountable will only help Republicans!" is basically the establishment line, because it absolves Democratic politicians of any and all responsibility for their actions, and, crucially, gives them no incentive to do anything but move right.

So you pick your guy and cover up the bad.

Trump is scum and I would never vote for him but Biden is a fucking train wreck as well. I can't believe the best the Dems can do are Hilary and Senile Joe. Its pathetic.

It's a shame, Biden had the opportunity to be a dynamic president. I want him to win, but I feel like it's going to be a pointless 4 years. Obviously we need to pressure him to move to the left, which with Biden we have at least a small chance of doing that, rather than no chance with Trump. Still, he is probably going to have a pretty bad legacy, and I am tempted to believe he won't get reelected.

Why does the DNC have to suck so much =/

Uh, what?

If we're going to use that poll at face value, given that Bernie didn't win the nom, doesn't this argue against your point?

And if you're making the claim that Sanders is on the senate floor because of his well liked policies, it seems strange that he's such an outlier?

the primaries was when we should have been doing that. they're over and the Democrats got Biden. either you rally behind him and help progressive ideals or you don't and take the chance that SCOTUS gets 2 more ultra-conservative judges.

i agree, but i still hate Trump more than any other politician i've been alive for AND the idea of him getting to appoint TWO more SCOTUS seats terrifies me. Biden sucks. The DNC sucks. but Trump sucks considerably worse.

Which is even bleaker for trying to pass policy that is even further left, no?

I think in general, shit is bleak, and that Biden's policy is pretty much the furthest left things will be able to push for a while, with luck.

But pushing back a little bit, I don't think it's outrageous to say that the progressive platform is currently about over promising while knocking anyone that doesn't follow suit. We saw that with Warren.

Yes but I would argue the right tactics for moving the ball forward are different when you acknowledge that than when you don't.

I just don't think it's fair to say that something like the public option is less idealistic than m4a right now for instance. Both are equally aspirational and unrealistic without serious changes to our elected officials

I don't think it's quite so binary. I think the public option is far more likely to pass than M4A, and I think you'd agree that the path to that seems more likely than the path to M4A.

But also see my edit, where I do think that the current progressive platform is focused over promising and shaming those who don't follow in lock step. And I think this is a deliberate strategy, which is why I framed the alternative as more "honest".

I have my own issues with that. I mean I guess I would just say that sometimes they're just different ways of pulling people left, like Joe Biden and Bernie like ech other for a reason despite their disagreements. But like neither side is a junior partner, it's a coalition, you gotta try to satisfy everyone

It just feels like a bad way of thinking about things to me. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades right? Like they almost had the votes to push through the public option in 2010 but we don't have any more of a public option now because of it

Biden: Look here Jack, I mean Bernie, using the bully pulpit to advance the ball on popular policies already implemented everywhere else in the world is a pipe dream. I'm more realistic.

Biden: I'm going to cure cancer, Republicans will love working with Democrats under my watch, a partial ban on new permits for fracking on federal land by 2050 will be enough to stop climate change.

Eh, I suppose it depends on your view of things a little bit.

If you assume that there's any noise in the system, if you are near threshold and nothing changes, there's still a high probability of surpassing that threshold.

That's a little bit abstract, but I suppose it probably does something to highlight my thinking a little bit.
