Why was the weakest part of a Star Destroyer the shield generator?

Yeah, why couldn't they have made the life support systems the weakest part? Or maybe the weapons systems?!

Life support probably wouldn't use too much resources from the reactor.

Takes a lot of energy to establish a forcefield capable of deflecting laser fire I'd imagine.

It would make more sense that only a capital ship would be able to take the dome out though. X-Wings are too small to do that amount of damage logically.

Why dont fighter ships have one rear facing laser?

I feel like that could be useful sometimes.

Or some sort of chaff, which we've been capable of using since WWII.

We know pretty much everyone other than Luke relies on targeting computers to shoot, it would be extremely useful to have some sort of deployable countermeasure that can disrupt radar or other sensors to avoid being targeted.

Yeeeea, look the the trillion dollar F35, it has a gun that points backwards

...
As an aside, the balls on the top of a star destroyer are censor globes... but shields need censors to work otherwise you'd need astronomically more power (and why the Picard Maneuver in startrek works even through shields)

Y-Wings have turret mounted ion cannons. While they can be controlled by the gunner in the 2-seat variant, in the single-seat version the pilot usually locks the cannons facing forward, though a few would lock them facing aft.

X-Wings carry proton torpedoes which can do substantial damage to a capital ship. 6 torpedoes can destroy a fully shielded Corellian Corvette.

A Star Destroyer would normally win against the Enterprise but if they knew about the domes they could just do a blitz attack and wipe it out fast.

Those headsets on the backs and side of there heads are basically artificially induced aspengers to allow better data processing. They have a problem with these guys getting stolen or running away with sensitive data. Why not just make a radio cage where if the stop receiving signals that it fries itself.

Heck using droids with simulated personalities is just asking for them to go rogue. Would it be a problem to just limit the types of droids on the empire ships to maintenance and probe droids. I mean if a rogue droids can pretty much ground a vessel why allow it. Its not like the empire needs astromech. Non of there ships require it for inflight

Worse - why give droids personalities at all? It's kind of established that they need their databases wiped periodically to keep from going too self-determinant, and people's willingness to do so (and to treat them like little more than furniture, excepting the main viewpoint characters) - and to use things like restraining bolts - pretty clearly indicates that no one considers droids to be actually "alive" in any meaningful way. So why not just give most of them virtual intelligence equal to the level required for them to fulfill their tasks, but not full artificial intelligence that mimics (or outright generates) personality?

It's pretty much the least moral possible scenario - it's making your tools self-aware enough to be literal slaves instead of just tools, when it isn't even necessary. It's like droid designers in the Star Wars universe are the most sadistic assholes ever. "Well, this translator robot is cool and all, but I just can't consider it a success unless we give it enough of a personality to be terrified all the time, and then we wipe its memory every few weeks just so it doesn't get uppity. I just can't get hard unless all our robots are living a torturous and tormented existence."
