The other day someone let me catalog the 6 Sanrio posters. I guess theyre obtainable though amiibo cards that came out in Japan. I ordered a set for myself so if anyone wants to catalog them just let me know.

Got four of them already. Got them from either giving the daily gift or doing their errands. I'm just not sure if the quality of the gift matters. Like if it has to be something valuable that they like, or just giving a non-native fruit or semi-expensive bug/fish is good enough. Nate gave me his for giving him a peacock butterfly, but the lazy animals just genuinely like bugs in general. Tank gave me his for a rattan wardrobe, which is like 6000 bells and kinda goes with his housing theme. I wish I could remember how I got Canberra's, but sadly I don't. Kevin was just for catching him the seahorse he asked for.

Theoretically if they're at max friendship, you should be able to soft-reset their reward (save, give them the gift/fulfill the request, reset if the reward isn't their photo). I did that a bunch in New Leaf, but haven't tried yet for NH.

I've just been giving villagers random furniture and clothing I don't need, but if non-native fruit works too that's a lot easier.

Is there some tell that they're at max friendship? I have a bunch of villagers writing me letters and stuff but apart from that I'm not sure where I'm at.

I got a Nook Miles thing for my first 3 villagers becoming "best friends" but I don't know if there's actually a tell in the game besides that.

Outside of the first three where you get stamps, there doesn't seem to be a clear cut way to tell. Just that if they give you gifts fairly often when talking to them or send you unsolicited letters, that those are good signs.

For whatever reason they don't show up in the poster tab, but they do show up if you search for "poster".

Yeah, the poster tab only shows characters that you've personally brought to Harv's Island. Just obtaining someone's poster from another player doesn't count there.

Finally got to see inside the house of one of the first three residents I found. It's decorated just with the stuff you make for the plot? Is there any way to get it to go to how that residents normal house design would be or are you stuck with it that way until he moves out?

Alternatively, you can look at it another way, that if some of your favorite villagers have the basic houses, it is more rare, because you had incredible RNG to get them, as opposed to all the people who just use amiibo or Nook Miles tickets. And there is no way to get those houses back either.
