Did it?

I don't think I've ever seen the internet drop ones of its "precious" shows as hard and as fast as they did Game of Thrones.

Historically shows with bad payoffs are doomed to fall out of pop culture (like Lost) and GoT seems to be no exception.

I defended the show for the first two episodes of the season, but I had a revelation after episode 3 and realized that yeah, the people saying it was shit were right.

I haven't tried to watch any of the earlier seasons yet, but I know they'll be tainted if I ever do

Yeah it ruined the show for me

I still go back and watch parts of the earlier seasons (Tyrion and Bronn, Sandor and Arya, etc.) but I highly doubt I'll ever rewatch the entire series

Gonna read all the books if they ever get finished

You'd probably be better off reading them, taking a 7 year sabbatical into the desert, becoming intimately familiar with Martin's writing style, writing your own final books and convincing Martin to publish those instead

I'm okay with how it ended. Don't particularly like it but meh. The reasons why it turned out that way are far more aggravating than the show itself.

It was a bad season, but even during the good seasons when I was enjoying it, I was never super invested. Like, I knew I was never gonna rewatch the show. Maybe because I caught onto it late, I don't know. I didn't even watch season 7.

I actually never even watched the finale. After the terrible penultimate episode I just looked up the spoilers and washed my hands with it.

Its really not. After S8E3 I mostly finished watching to just not leave something that close being finished, unfinished.

It did kill the show for me and ruined any rewatchability. But in retrospect the show started going downhill after season 4, which itself showed a few cracks. But I could always forgive the issues in those seasons because there was always a possibility of things improving, and there were many plotlines and mysteries I still wanted to see the conclusion of.

I fucking LOVED seasons 1-4.

5 and 6 were a sharp downturn but was still resolving plotlines with satisfaction. Arya's plot dissolving into shit was the biggest indicator of what was to come.

7 was pretty much a turd floating purely on the merits of previous seasons with the only good parts being scenes I had waited years to see unfold.

8 they didn't even fucking try and I hope D&D never work in Hollywood again.

Useless fucking hacks.

People are big-ass babies about GoT's ending on a disproportionate level. I will argue in defense of "The Bells" and overall did not have a problem with Jaime's arc outside of needing a little more time to flesh out, pretty much hated "The Long Night," thought plenty of stuff overall in S8 was pretty dumb or rushed.. but even if you hated every bit of that, have a hard time seeing how it "ruins the entire show"

Dexter had an ending that approached ruining the entire show because every single season of Dexter was driving towards the ultimate resolution of Dexter's character development and his evasion of the law. Game of Thrones had waaaaay too many brilliant arcs over the years for a few disappointments to tank eight seasons of television outright.

Now, THAT said, I do agree that the show was truly only "all-time TV pantheon of greats" tier for the first three or four seasons.

Nah the gf hadnt seen it and wanted to watch it so I went in with open eyes, knowing that 8 is bad, and honeslty it didnt ruin it for me. Seasons 1-4 are all time great television. Would I have preferred a better ending, of course. But Im not some drama queen. 6 garbage hours over 73 hours doesnt ruin it for me.

it was a terrible end to the most popular television show since Lost and potentially spoiled/ruined the conclusion of a book series people have been reading since 1996

Am I the only one who doesn't think the Lost finale was bad?

I get if you didn't like the show after season 3/4 but the ending itself was fine and better than a lot of the stuff leading up to it.

I kinda think a lot of the backlash there was people who dropped off the show seasons ago tuning into the last episode expecting everything to make sense.

Didn't the showrunners for GoT intentionally hamstring the last couple seasons so they could do a Star Wars thing...then the Star Wars deal fell through, so now all their left with is a ruined series to their name?

Basically, yeah. HBO was going to give them pretty much anything they wanted and they decided two 7 episode seasons written by google translate was the best option.

Lost's ending was good, I agree.

GoT S8 was a travesty, but 5-7 were also varying degrees of bad.

My only real complaint with the final season is that it was rushed. The last two seasons could have been three seasons with 10 episodes each and been waayyy better. I agree with almost every plot decision in season 8, in terms of who dies, how they die, and who ends up doing which job/filling which role at the end of the series. I do wish more time had been given to developing those outcomes, though.

It is when the majority of the plotlines formed in the prior seasons ended in that season.

Imagine if your Grandma took years to weave a beautiful blanket(Seasons 1-4) and then you took over and started fucking it up(Seasons 5-7). Only for you to grow tired of even trying anymore, deciding to just grab the ends of the blanket and tie it together in a haphazard knot(season 8).

That blanket is ruined.

The plot outcome didn't bother me. I thought people were expecting a happily-ever-after ending for characters that really didn't deserve it.

The way it was all so rushed was definitely a downer though, and it looked like some of the production values and plot continuity took a big hit.

The vast majority of people don't have a problem with the way the plot turned out, just the way it happened. It's pretty much the universal belief that the books are going to end the same way, they're just not going to skip the 2500 pages that get to that point.
