Several books that were not removed from classrooms still came under harsh scrutiny. "The Jungle" and "A Christmas Carol" could be interpreted as advocating for socialism, while "A Street in Bronzeville" was called to question for showing too much "realism" in describing racism against African Americans, according to a district memo.

This last part is the worst part.

I can attest The Great Gatsby is harmful to students.

I had to read it as a student and it gave me a concussion by making me slam my head on the desk a million times to relieve the agony.

I had one parent this year sent me a slew of emails shitting all over me / my school because I had some kids / her daughter read Freak the Mighty. Just because it said the r-word

Ironically the book was very against people using that word, just one of the main antagonists uses it a couple times

Crazy. One of the books I was forced to read has an actual rape in it

can we get new approved books for reading? It would be nice to get kids to see reading as a fun activity rather than something you only do for school. Introduce them to good books from their era.
This.

It took me years after I graduated high school to start reading for fun again.

Busybodies were just the SJWs of a couple generations ago. All that's really changed is the general leanings of the obnoxious complainers demanding some damn thing be removed from society somehow.

Dont know why so many people hate Gatsby. Also dont know why people would be so offended by it that they would ban it.
I have heard conservative libertarian types say that it stigmatizes and unfairly characterizes the wealthy, old money types Gatsby was trying to ingratiate himself to.

IMO it is a great novel. I haven't read it since HS but I would consider reading it again.

The Things They Carried is full of sexual references? Really? It's about the Vietnam War. It does have bad language (and no high schooler has ever heard THOSE words, you know!), but it's not sexual. They're probably offended because it's about truth and lies and the gray area in between.

I hated The Great Gatsby as a student but loved teaching it. It's really apropos in the current world, too.

The Catcher in the Rye better not be on that list either, it's more undeserving of being there than Gatsby.

"A Christmas Carol" could be interpreted as advocating for socialism

...Actually, I'm starting to doubt whether this school board is competent enough for deciding on these matters.

What are you really teaching a kid, by forcing him or her to read some thick-ass boring book, while expecting that kid to reach the "right" conclusion about it? Kids aren't even thought how to think critically, and a report that tl;dr's to "John Lennon was shot over this?" is an easy F.

Great Gatsby is such an "English class" book I don't know why anyone would want to read it otherwise. Like its an OK book I guess, but its so heavy handed with its metaphors and themes and imagery that its built to be taught in a class so that kids can learn these things.

Its better than Catcher in the Rye at least.

It's funny to me that they removed Catch-22 for violence. First of all, it's a book about the horrors of WW2, of course there's going to be violence.

Secondly, there's also sex & even rape in it, but no mention of that from these moronic schoolboard pieces of shit.
