My only experience with crack is The Wire so excuse my ignorance.

If you carried one would you rather have taser or pepper spray?

Do cops still get those L shaped batons or is it just those telescopic ones?

Does your precinct call smashing your light over someone's head giving them Maglight Shampoo or is that a local thing?

The Wire is such a good show.

I carry a Taser, and I loathe pepper spray. I do not carry it for multiple reasons. One, youre not supposed to use pepper spray in tandem with a Taser, as there have been concerns the electricity could ignite the spray. Whether that would happen or not, its not a chance Id take. Two, fuck pepper spray. Ive been hit with it once, purposely, for certification, and more than enough times accidentally because some dickwagon didnt check which way the wind was blowing before he started spraying. I hate it.

Id rather be tased.

As for the batons, I think some departments still issue the older style, unless theyve changed that in recent years. Regardless, my department doesnt require that you carry any baton. I have a telescopic ASP baton in my war bag that Ill use for the occasional window break if need be. But its not all that effective on human beings, in all honesty, and the optics are never good.

Lol, most people dont carry Maglites anymore. I have a Fenix tac-light that would be useless to hit anyone with.

We used to have an older street worker who would blow any and everyone for 20.75.

She was one of the nicest people we ever had to feel with, never gave us any issues even when she had to be arrested, and she told me that she charged the extra 75 cents because it made her stand out.

And yes, she carried change.

Im in PA, so I can only speak to our sentencing guidelines. Burglary carries a maximum sentence of 20 years, but nobody will ever do 20 years for burglary.

Its a fairly new thing, starting to allow beards, and its far from universal. Tons of departments are still following the military clean-shaven style.

Not necessarily. I work in a decent department that gives me enough autonomy to make my own choices.

I havent made a marijuana arrest in at least a year and a half, for example, and that was a pound of it found in the trunk of a car with a decent load of crack and heroin. Ive confiscated plenty and thrown it out, though. Thats punishment enough.

Fairly in depth, but this varies departmentally.

Larger departments have designated background investigators, so these departments theoretically should be able to provide in-depth investigations into applicants. It doesnt always work this way, though, depending on how many potential officers are being hired. And thats a similar theme elsewhere.

You generally fill out a lengthy background packet, of sorts. This includes: previous employment history, relationship history, numerous work AND character references, questions regarding drug history, criminal history, credit checks, waivers for medical records, etc.

A lot of departments then will utilize a polygraph examination to determine deception on said packet. Following that, there are medical exams and a psychological exam.

Now, thats all standard procedure; there are, of course, instances where less deserving people are hired due to familial connections, etc., just like in any other field.

Depends on the department. Why did they even ask him about porn? And some departments care more about experimental drug use than others. It also depends on what drugs.

When I was younger, I was drinking and chatting with friends in a bar when a team of police officers did their rounds, complete with a sniffer dog.

I made the mistake of discussing with my compatriots a study I had read of dog handlers unconscious biases influencing the dogs false positive rates within earshot.

Sure enough, the dog found me exceedingly interesting, and I was asked to slowly and carefully empty my bag (which was also searched), empty my pockets and I also received a rather thorough pat-down.

When asked if I had anything the dog could be detecting, I indicated that I was in possession of an open bag of peanut butter m&ms, to which I received the reply the dog is not trained to detect m&ms.

Their general attitude was rather hostile, to be honest.

Considering at that point in my life I had not even been in the general vicinity of any illegal substances whatsoever, was the dog indeed detecting m&ms, or was it victimisation on the part of the police officers?

In the interests of full disclosure, the dog was a Labrador.
