Yes, releasing ports on the VC, not mildly refreshing old games and selling them as new for $60.

I still don't get what they're doing with the old library. It's almost like they were about to adopt a Netflix for old games model but then realized that it might cut into their potential for future remake/remaster sales and didn't know what to do so they did a half measure that left nobody happy.

If they did something like $5 a month for the entire first party NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy (color), and GBA catalogue, they'd be making guaranteed bank all for something that's basically making them nothing now.

You have a point for VC (even if VC has been retired in lieu of the NES/SNES Online stuff), but the ports and remasters (especially the remasters) would all be sold at full price.

They already did Star Fox 64 3D. Best you can probably hope for is a port of that game with some minor enhancements.

They bothered to do a full remake for a Gameboy Color Game and charged full price for it. Simple ports for half the price can be profitable and would require less work.

And these are similar excuses like when someone would ask about SNES games on the 3DS. The same excuses would have probably been made about NES & GBA games if Nintendo didnt do the Ambassador program soon after launch. They ported Wii games to the 3DS so it wouldnt have been much more difficult or costly for a simple port of Super Mario World

Sony isn't great at it. It bugs me that I can't play any of the ps1 or ps2 games that I bought on psn for ps3 on my ps4. And they probably won't let you do that on ps5 either

Yeah, Nintendo handled VC very well during the Wii era, not only offering a wide array of their own back catalog but also of other older third party consoles (such as Sega Master System, Genesis, Neo Geo, and TurboGrafx).

The WIi U/3DS era is when they fell off and started focusing less on it, with not even all of Nintendo's own games being rereleased on those VCs I believe, and a large number of third party games also never being rereleased on them (and with the Wii Shop Channel shut down, those games are permanently inaccessible if you didn't buy them beforehand).

And now, the Switch paywalls the back catalog behind the Nintendo Switch Online membership, and while the NES one used to see monthly new releases, once the SNES one launched, Nintendo lost their mind and made both only see new releases very sporadically. Combined with no news of N64 games being added as of yet, I have no idea what they are thinking there.

I can still download them and play across my Vita or PSP or PS3 for PS1 games. That's much better than my Wii games which are only left on a USB drive now and could never be downloaded again.

There is definitely something weird about the PS4 with that though. We know they have working PS1 and 2 emulators on the PS4 due to hackers discovering them. So you have to wonder why they didn't want you to be able to play those games.
