I've been with the same public accounting firm for the last six years. I got burned out last fall but leaving during busy season (Jan-April) is professional suicide so I've stuck it out the last 4 months.

Now I'm accepting the job to be a controller at a company. The benefits are worse but the pay is better and I'll have much better work life balance. I'll also be working remotely full-time so that will be interesting.

I'm more nervous about leaving my current job than starting a new one. I have a lot of good friends here and me leaving is gonna kneecap some of their summer schedules. But I gotta put me first. They'll understand.

Lol @ being so unconfident in your skills you consider taking a break "professional suicide".

I quit my job last May, took a year long break, vacationed in Europe and then landed on my feet. When they asked me why the gap in employment, I told them I felt like it and had the savings to keep my head above water.

Grow a pair.

Job market is tough. Nothing to do with skills. Pretty sure you come from privilege as well so it's easier to find a job.

That isn't what I meant. In public accounting January through April are busy season. Leaving right before busy season or during busy season is a great way to essentially torch the good will of the firm I just spent the last six years working at. Six, generally enjoyable, professionally invaluable years. I've established professional relationships that I plan to maintain for a long time. That's why I didn't quit right then and there.

If by privilege you mean I didn't make dumbass decisions like getting a lot of credit debt when I turned 18, or even worse, racking up student loans when I didnt know what I wanted to do with my life.

I got into mortgage at an early age and found out what jobs offer high pay at remote access. I went to community college and am Mexican/Spanish. So fuck off with that privilege nonsense.

Nice tc. I'm an accountant myself and might pick your brain on something if you don't mind...

Today is the start of my second week at my new job (jr staff accountant for a midsized company)

My first week was mostly onboarding, training, etc so I didnt get a chance to dig into the systems side until today. Obviously with COVID-19 I've had to do a lot of remote training etc but was still excited to get going.

This morning I logged in and started playing around in the system and familiarizing myself. It didnt take long before I noticed something was very wrong.

I began looking at the day to day transactions, the individual journal entries, and noticed something very strange - the transactions were listed twice.

I thought this must be an error, a one off thing, but sure enough when I checked every journal entry I found the same thing. If the company purchased something, theyd credit one account, but then at the same they would debit another in that same transaction. This went on for millions upon millions of dollars worth of transactions.

I immediately freaked out when i saw this, obviously. I got up from my desk, phoned my boss, and told him I had to log off ASAP because I was feeling very sick. I paced around the room for a bit and then I called the companys anonymous misconduct line and reported what I had found.

Now Im calmed down a bit and I dont know wtf to do. Im debating writing an email to the CFO but Im not sure how complicit he is. Obviously Im going to quit tomorrow (dont want to get wrapped up in this and have my career ruined).

Thoughts?

Shit. That's almost certainly fraud. Can you see in the ERP who posted that entry and who approved it? You might need to go over their head and tell their boss, maybe even the CFO that you have discovered fraudulent entries being posted. Before you do that though, get a bunch of evidence and save it on a flash drive and give it to a news station with instructions to review it if they don't hear back from you in one day. That'll be your leverage in case the CFO is also in on it. And remember don't go to HR. HR exist to protect the company, not you.

Good luck.

To Op, good on you for leaving public accounting. Hope the grass is greener on the other side. I'm still in big 4 after 10+ years lol. FWIW, leaving to join commercial is a well trodden/typical route - only difference is you're doing it during a very interesting time.

If you've been there six years, I'm assuming you're either a manager or at the very upper end of senior associate (assuming you joined as a grad) meaning you're at the ripe time to leave.

Agreed. But that being said there have been a few people over the years who have really burnt bridges with the way they left. Doesn't sound like Op is one of those people though.

Yeah, I've been a manager for two busy seasons now. And it was fine but I'm ramping up for another summer full of EBP engagements which are just soulless and frankly I kind of miss being in the thick of it like I was when I was a senior.

Indeed. It is professional suicide to burn the bridges at that point in time since realistically they won't be able to recruit someone to replace you for that very short timeframe so your colleagues will end up shouldering it.

I'm not familiar with what EBP is (we don't use that acronym here) but it doesn't surprise me - I actually enjoyed being a senior the most as that was the time I used to really get into the detail and had the time to do so. Manager is probably the worst level in terms of expectations/pressures and risk of someone else's mistake becoming your issue.

EBP are employee benefit plans. I can't imagine you would do many at Big 4 level but they are very common summer work at my firm (though I personally think we have largely outgrown them). They are boring, low-revenue compliance audits and just no fun at all.

And yeah my account varies depending on what device I'm using.
