Do you always thank someone for their service if they tell you they were in the military?

Never had a chance. I do greatly appreciate and respect what they've had to do though.

No, but it's one of those things where it's their job and they must know how much their effort is appreciated without having to be thanked every day. I don't think other front line people (police, fire, medical) feel differently. It's not a job anyone can do.

Like any other profession, there are going to be some people who deserve more respect than others.
Im sure that many go into military service because they want to defend their country, their family, their freedom, etc. But there are also people who go into it because they like guns, they like the authority and admiration they think service brings, and even because they think it would be a blast to shoot at someone and take down the bad guys.
Ive known guys on both ends of this, and so theres no way I would be able to just give a blanket respect to everyone who serves.

I don't but it's mostly because I think they just want to be treated like anyone else. They chose a calling, doesn't mean they're better than me or anyone else.

If they did something worthy of thanks then they should get it but not just because of their service in general.

Technically he's more of a police commissioner. He isn't part of the force but simply in charge.

If we're not going out of our way to thank key workers for providing everyday essential services, I don't see why we should make a special case of thanking strangers just for having worn a military uniform at some point in their lives.

No, and I hate hearing it. I never got deployed or anything, so I kind of feel really bad when someone thanks me for my service. The most help I did was provide medical coverage for training.
