I think one of the biggest dangers about the Board is that, over time, if you have pleasant but forgettable interactions with people, they tend to blend into the background while the really negative interactions stick to you, and you remember the name. It means that, with so many people on the board, another user really has to step above and beyond, I think, from the normal mill of post-and-ditch comments that people make to stand out in a positive way. Someone who has a pervasively negative attitude stands out much more quickly. So I think that a lot of potentially great, pleasant, quieter users who I just rub shoulders with for a moment in a topic tend to fade from my mind quickly.

I don't know if anyone else feels the same way as I do about that though.

I wrote a whole essay on another forum about why having a reputation/Karma system was flawed for the same reason. People who form the foundation of a good experience blend in and don't tend to get recognition (with the additional flaw "aberrant" or "exceptional" behavior is incentivized so people often try too hard to stand out to get that sweet sweet recognition)

Honestly, I've been trying formulate a response to that post, but I'm just in a really bad headspace at the moment, and I can't quite articulate what I want to say, unfortunately. I think, generally speaking, I take things too personally on the board probably, and I lack some quality I've never been able to identify that would help me fit in well with the board in general. I also probably made a tactical mistake inserting myself into the gauntlet crew early on in my board tenure, which probably skewed my vision of the board. At this point, it's probably far too late to correct false opinions about myself or change minds that are likely rightfully firm in a negative opinion about me.

All of that is to say that as someone who likely dwells far too much on negativity, an opportunity to acknowledge good users on this board is always welcome. I probably should try harder to get to know some of these people that are so well-liked around the board.

Maybe the quarantining is driving me nuts.

I've never really tried to "fit in" anywhere. I've just gone wherever I felt like going and didn't go where I didn't feel like going.

I don't really hold negative opinions of most B8 users unless they're just outright trolls, and thus I have no real reason to hold any regard for them.

I hesitate to say this, primarily because I think the perception is that I'm grousing and complaining, which I'm not, but I think that's "easy for you to say" on Board8, Leon, because you are a naturally likable person. You've developed a niche that seems healthy and allows you the right amount of outlet for yourself. I mean, I even feel hesitant to post in your topic corner sometimes just because it feels like there's a perfect homeostasis that's been cultivated there. I feel like you have an anchoring personality that doesn't have to "fit in", but that's just me, probably.

I don't want to feel like I'm excluding people by making those topics. That wasn't the intention. It's just open for anyone and everyone, and I honestly kinda wish more people participated in them regularly.

Although I don't know if everyone would agree with your assessment that I'm a naturally likable person...!

Im inclined to believe every other rating is accurate with this precision.

Even when Im feeling fed up and genuinely stop caring what most people think, I always hold out hope for someone to acknowledge me, not gonna lie.
