I'm mostly fine with the animation now. I went straight from Korra to this, so maybe it was just culture shock. The chase and fight scenes were pretty smooth. It's mostly just the fluidity that's an issue, the style itself is pretty good even if I'm not a huge fan of the character design. I think I just associate the 3D character thing too much with cheaply made shows for preschoolers.

I'm pretty happy with the plot though. I finished the third episode which seems like the kicking off point since it's when Reyla, Callum, and Ezram(?) leave the castle and go to take the egg back. The first episode was super blah, but it picked up almost immediately in the second. It's not playing things as straight as I initially thought and there are a few interesting plot hooks.

I think I'm the least interested in the three main characters, particularly Ezram. He's not really done anything so far except be the plucky little kid. Reyla and Callum are good, just nothing mindblowing yet. That said, I have hopes for the other two. Reyla knowing that her buddies killed their dad and hiding it is good. Callum not knowing if the king knew about the egg and then deciding to abandon him is great.

The Dark Magician and his daughter, Dark Magician Girl are interesting. I like that he's not all doom and gloom. I honestly wasn't sure if he was going to be an antagonist because he's quite jovial, but then he stole Callum's voice with a desiccated hand so I guess that's kind of answered. Even then, they prefaced that scene with the king being a complete dick to him when I'm pretty sure he was going to offer up his life, so it's still not completely black and white. I'd also forgotten about a mirror he was fondling, so maybe he's secretly talking with elves through it? Dark Magician Girl is kind of the same way. She's setup to be Callum's love interest and she has some of that bright anime moe bullshit going on, but then she summons demon wolves and captures an elf to do god-knows-what to him. And then you have their son/brother, Celtic Guardian, who just seems like a pretty chill dude but is also related to two people doing soul magic.

Small addendum: I'm now like 80% sure the king's soul is in his pet bird. There's a lot of potential plot that immediately cuts off three episodes in if he's actually dead. And come to think of it, I think Dark Magician left the room without his snake basket.

The king is definitely in the bird. I don't think Viren would be mocking it if it was just a bird. There's also a bit of implied intrigue with the high priestess or whatever she is clearly not onboard with him crowning himself.

Amaya is cool. Her being deaf is interesting, as is the fact that she fights with a big fuck-off shield.

Interested to see what the Source Box is about, but I honestly have no idea. Maybe it just absorbs the Primal Sources so you could use the Box for all of them instead of carrying six different balls around.

The shot with Viren in the dark, his silhouette barely illuminated by his closet of magic murder butterflies is the first time I've been really impressed by this show's animation. I'm wondering now if he's secretly all fucked up looking because he was completely in shadow until he did some magic and then he sighed, all refreshed and shit.

My impression of the bonding ribbon is that it's going to eventually kill her. The ritual involved them saying stuff like "my eyes for justice." She doesn't seem quite as panicked as she probably should be though, so maybe that's not the case. Although she did fuck up her little twirly show when she spun the bread with that hand.

I'm starting to really like Viren. Characters like him are often just blatantly evil, but he has the arguments to back up his attempt to seize power.

Oh good, Amaya's interpreter has a name and purpose outside of speaking for her....and literally the second I finished typing that, Viren takes him off the mission.

"My parents aren't really dead, but I wish they were." Goddamn, Reyla. The humans killed the giant fuck-off thunder dragon, what the hell were they supposed to do? It did sound like her ribbon was tightening. I'm pretty sure she said she gave her heart for justice, but maybe it's going to cut her hand off.

And that's pretty much confirmed at the end when the elf prisoner's ribboned arm is completely purple.

I failed to mention it before, but Corvus' introduction was hilarious. Alaya calls his name, her identically dressed soldiers part, and there's the future JRPG party character standing there in his unique clothes with dreads and an eye scar. He fights with a hook and chain though which I'm always a fan of.

I think Viren is being a little shortsighted. He could probably manipulate Ezram into being a puppet king without all of the suspicion he's placing on himself with his current plan. I think he's also being silly by asking Soren's dopey ass to murder them. He should have at least considered asking Claudia.

I'm interested in what the mirror does. My assumption when I saw it in the first episode was that Viren was communicating with it, but that's not the case. Maybe it's supposed to work with the Source Box? I'm basing that solely on them both being magical items with unknown purposes. I think they're also made out of the same kind of wood.

Is Reyla meant to be kind of an idiot? There's no reason to avoid telling them that they're being chased by one of Alaya's guys and it would have precluded all their complaints about hurrying up. Then Callum repeatedly stresses that the three of them are standing on cracking ice while she decides to make her big confession. And then she's just completely on-board with letting a ten-year-old jump into a frozen lake by himself. Maybe she was hoping that if he just drowned a little bit, her ribbon would come off.

It's not exactly a huge spoiler, but it's a little annoying that the Netflix thumbnail shows the hatched dragon. And when you select it, it shows Viren wearing the crown with a weird glowing worm thing around his neck.

The subtitles tell me that Reyla's putting on an accent to pretend to be human, but I can't tell much of a difference. I'm not sure how they're going to find help for a dragon egg in a human village in the middle of Bumfuck, Nowhere, but there was a random dude with a magic elf blade. Surprised Reyla isn't annoyed by that because the dude almost assuredly stole it from an elf's body.

For an elven assassin that can turn herself invisible, Reyla is really bad at sneaking up on people.

The horse vet is wearing extremely thick gloves that go up to his elbows. I'm extremely worried what he uses them for.

I wasn't expecting the Cursed Caldera to be a thing. I just figured it was another throwaway "oh man this world is so fantasy" line. It looks like an elf lives there, so maybe it's an Earth...glow elf. One that draws magic power from the Earth. Dunno what else would be on a mountain. Maybe Stars since it's so high-up?

The dude probably shouldn't be running with his magically hot dagger. He's definitely going to kill himself like that.

They're shitting on Callum, but his Flash Woof Zap Slash plan is pretty sound.

So the entire thing where they said they were already dead when they did that ritual was just a cultural thing, not literal. Makes sense.

The giant leech monster is neat. I liked the way they introduced it with the giant fuck-off monster that had been eaten. It was kind of surprising because I was betting all of the monsters would just be illusions by the elf.

Is Ellis gonna steal Callum's Primal Stone? She was talking about wishing she was confident and powerful, then he says that all the power and confidence is the Primal Stone. Oh, maybe not. She's giving him a pep talk now. Though, "I think you'd be amazing even without your magical ball," sounds weird out of context.

Whoa, they actually showed Reyla slitting its throat. Little gory for a kid's show. It hatching into hundreds of little leeches was some Legend of Zelda shit.

So Viren's keeping trapped souls in his magic murder bag. I wonder if he can use them as fuel for dark magic. And the mirror is a fate worse than death. Genuinely no idea what that could mean. My guess would have been that it traps your soul in it, but then Viren just does that exact thing.

Oh, Ezran can talk to animals. Makes sense. Explains why he could talk to the dragon.

The moon part of the box is glowing, so I guess I was wrong. I thought they'd change it up since we've already seen the Moon magic, but I guess not. Maybe the Stars are going to be more of a powerful, mysterious thing.

Ezran can talk to animals, but he is also a moron. That was not a "help me" moan, that was a creepy murder moan. Reyla isn't much smarter because she walked into an obvious spider nest. Her opening the webbing to have whatever was in there crumble to dust was super fucked up for a kid's show. And then they compound that by having her talk about it, "Whatever was in there was barely alive. It crumbled to dust right before my eyes."

Some of this has to be fake. The ghost faces are just too Scooby Doo to be anything else.

Immediately proven wrong, the ghost faces are actually kind of creepy patterns on the ass of the spider.

Immediately reproven right, it turns out the spider is just part of the illusion too lol. It looks really cool though.

This show's pretty cool about inclusivity. Alaya is cool and the nice little lesson here with the wolf and the illusion.

Oh, lmao. I knew that lightning spell was a little too OP and wouldn't be lasting long, but I like how they got rid of the Primal Stone.

The dragon was able to bite off the ribboh shit the credits show a clawed handprint in the mirror. Maybe the Dragon King's soul is trapped in it?

Anyway, I thought that hand was gone for sure, but the dragon was able to bite it off. Hopefully the moon mage tells the group that it was a tracking spell because she was very casually letting them play with it. And I guess Viren isn't old, he's just super fucked up looking from using dark magic his entire life.

And I'm pretty sure that's the end of season one. It was alright. Not much substance but enough style that I enjoyed it.

Starting season 2.

The castle overlooking the big volcanic divide looks kinda pathetic. As were the Sunfire elves that took that asswhooping into the volcano. Even the lady with her magic sword and probably-magic armor nearly took a dive.

I know Viren is the bad guy, but he's still right about the elves. In the situation they're in, it's abominably stupid that his advisors are saying they have to completely ignore that threat and focus on finding the princes.

Wait, the moon mage didn't bother telling them that there was dark magic and just let them hang out there for two days? And they're only just now bothering to ask about learning magic and teaching the dragon to fly? What the fuck? It's not like he'd really be able to use the magic anyway since he doesn't have any balls.

Lot of lore about how magic works. My takeaway is that elven tribes don't just specialize in a certain element, they can only wield that element. My guess is that it's going to turn out humans are special because they can, with the right training, acquire the arcanum of all the Sources. I guess I also didn't realize that the moon equates to illusion magic, but that tracks with the Moonshadow's invisibility.

And come on, Lujanne, where the fuck were your giant leeches and creepy ghost spiders when Claudia and Soren were trying to climb your mountain?

Callum is dumb as fuck. Even if he does trust Claudia, he should realize that Lujanne is almost certainly going to murder her if she learns about the Nexus. At least he's not seduced enough that he thought he'd try dark magic. It should also be noted that Lujanne is really bad at her job. She just lets Claudia and Callum wander around the sacred place she's supposed to be guarding.

It was kind of hilarious that the wise old mentor on the magic mountaintop is actually really bad at giving advice. "Just lie if you want to gain his trust." Fitting for an illusionist, I guess.

"You're nothing! I thought you were going to be something special, something important!" I'm guessing his reaction to seeing his reflection with a true-sight potion wasn't really about the mirror.

Callum had to have had some thought that his dad was dead, so I don't know how angry he'll be with Reyla for keeping the truth from him.

It's an interesting situation set up here. All of the differing but same motivations crossing over one another with most of the characters doubting what they're meant to be doing.

Accidentally deleted everything I wrote for the last episode.

I'd forgotten entirely about Corvus, but it was cool to see him intervene. A little more intrigue between the two human factions though I'm not sure how that comes out if Viren keeps capturing Alaya's dudes.

I was glad to see there wasn't a ton of drama between Callum and Reyla, but Callum probably should have told Ezram. Maybe it'll work out for the best since the king is obviously in the bird.

For a kid's show, it was pretty obvious that Callum thought he was about to get some strange from Claudia.

Now they're flying the eagle to Mordor, I guess?

I assumed the thing in the mirror was a star elf of some kind, but it's looking more and more like it's something pretending to be a star elf. The first impression that it's letting Viren spy on someone doesn't really gel with the prisoner calling it something worse than death. Viren's a blatant idiot for going along with its little magic trick as long as he did.

Callum's also not the brightest for grabbing a lightning rod, but at least he figured out he was being an idiot. Start off with an easier Source. Go bury yourself or something.

Viren is both really good at diplomacy and also really, stupidly bad at it. Take advantage of the queen's youth to manipulate her, don't insult her by saying she's not smart/experienced enough to do the job. He's also so fucking extra with his big magic map.

I guess Harrow's wife dying fucks things all up. I've not seen much in the way of a "just society" in Katolis. To be fair, I've not seen much of Katolis' society, so I'm mostly just basing that on the fact that it still has a monarchy.

Huh, little queen's parents are both ladies. Show's hashtagwoke as fuck.

I'm starting to think that Viren turned evil because he's the smartest person in the room and nobody ever listens to him. What Harrow did is astronomically stupid. Sarai is right in saying that they shouldn't be using a Magma Titan's heart to cast dark magic over the weather, but Viren only has to do that because Harrow's sense of fairness is literally killing his country. And it's pretty obvious that this is the nail that eventually leads to the elves invading the human kingdom. My impression is that Xadia was fine with just keeping the two countries separated with Thunder patrolling to keep the humans out. Now I'm guessing that Katolis' expeditions into Xadia were mostly to fix problems caused by Harrow's "fair policies." That eventually pisses off the elves/dragons enough that they retaliate and then the humans retaliate and on and on.

It's also really dumb that the king, queen, the lesbian queens, Viren, and Amaya are all going into enemy lands to slay a big lava monster, but that's a common fantasy trope and I'll let it slide.

the whole dynamic of harrow, his wife and viren is really interesting. again it opens up a bit more later down the line and my view of king harrow has really changed

Just that one episode changed my opinion of him tbh. He's so obsessed with ideals that he ignores the reality of the situation. Viren's claim in the second episode that Harrow's pride was getting in the way of utilizing the soul-swap spell is suddenly much more accurate now that they've shown that he did this shit all the time.

I keep being surprised by what this show get away with for a Y7 rating. Last episode had a pretty blatant sex joke and this one has the lava monster straight killing dudes. I guess it's a far cry from 90s DC shows always making sure that they show a bad guy parachuting out of a helicopter before it crashes.

I like the irony in Sarai being the one to kill it despite advising against it.

Yeah, another instance of Harrow doing a dumb thing for fairness' sake. Both Sarai and Amaya agree that leaving the wounded behind is the right call, but he says fuck that. He chances killing everyone in the party - which, again, is the full leadership of two kingdoms - and thousands back home. Maybe Lady Justice lied about what the blindfold did.

The transition of Thunder darkening the skies and getting ready to fucking body Harrow's party to Zym goofily "flying" was great. To be the titular character, Zym hasn't received much focus so far.

smh any WoW player could have told the lesbian queens that you have to DPS dragon bosses from the side to avoid that tail swipe.

Ohhhh god, Callum's awkward speech to Ezran a few episodes ago when he was trying to tell him that the king is dead is the same one the king gave him about their mom. That shit hit me.

I have to admit that I'm not sure how Viren's story connects to asking Aanya for help. I guess his point is that the two kingdoms have cooperated before while subtly hinting that they owe Katolis?

I give the show the benefit of the doubt and assume it's on purpose, but I'm not sure I'm supposed to be on Viren's side as often as I am lol. I thought he was being a little dramatic and lying, but the end of the episode shows that there are dragons in Katolis. The other kingdoms are just shrugging their shoulders at a very real threat.

It was good to see what the king's letter finally said. I didn't find it quite as touching as I expected since I now think Harrow's kind of a jackass, but at least we know what the box does now.

Oh, and I've been watching the credits because the drawing sometimes hint at future plotlines. It might be nothing, but one of them was Zym and Ezran flying around on that taffy hippo Ezran keeps dreaming about. That combined with their synchronized sleeping makes me wonder if they have some kind of psychic connection.

And then Viren gets his little worm demon. That last one probably would be less of a shock if the Netflix thumbnail didn't have Viren in a crown with a big caterpillar wrapped around his neck. His voice is cool as fuck too, as his musical theme.

Gotta say, I'm excited about the next episode.

Soren's entire confession was pretty heartbreaking. He trusts his father because his father is smart, but he's happy he's paralyzed because now he doesn't have to do terrible things for his father.

Speaking of, Viren remains my favorite character. He doesn't stupidly trust a mirror demon, he's driven a little desperate before he does the spell. And then he tries to research it, but it just erases itself. My guess is that was part of the caterpillar spell. It's probably really helpful if the people that most want to know who and what you are are incapable of finding that out.

Callum's sickness is a good warning against using dark magic. So far I've not really seen any downside other than you looking all fucked up.

Hey, I was right about Ezram and Zym having a psychic link. I quite like the dynamic shifting with Ezram going back to Katolis. It's not a surprise because lolnetflixthumbnails, but it allows more connection between the two plotlines. One of the biggest issues I've had with the show is that Viren is half the show but also completely disconnected from the main trio.

Speaking of, you can tell Viren's the good guy. His current plan of using mirror-demon magic to terrorize the other kingdoms doesn't really benefit him since the Council obviously isn't going to let him back into power regardless. The only explanation is that he's doing it because he legitimately doesn't want a bunch of elves steamrolling the human race.

It should also be mentioned that they showed him on-screen murdering a dude by freezing him and then shattering him into pieces. Legitimately don't understand the Y7 rating.

Callum's gained the ability to use the Sky source. I guess now he has to travel around and learn all the rest of the elements. Until he's some kind of....avatar of all of them.

Not a fan of Reyla's love confession. They've known each other two weeks. Really, the pacing is kind of weird. They've done the whole "we're friends now" thing but also acknowledged that the entire first two seasons happen over the course of two weeks.

My biggest problem with the show is the meandering path they're taking. There's an overarching goal of getting Zym back to the Dragon Queen, but no underlying goals along the way. Shit just happens.

It just makes the plot feel a bit aimless. I think it's why I enjoy Viren so much. He has clearcut goals and sets out to accomplish them. His stroyline feels like it's progressing. The trio's plot feels like it hasn't really moved since episode three. It's just them being arbitrarily closer to Xadia.

Okay, I'm a lot more comfortable giving the show credit for making Viren such an interesting character now that they've gone back to the super evil originator of dark magic and revealed his motives. It's also interesting that the mirror demon was the narrator way back in the first episode and was, presumably, the one that taught humans dark magic in the first place.

I'm a little surprised the dragons can talk. I just sort of assumed that elves can understand them, but they don't actually speak English.

The animation has definitely stepped up a notch. Not just in fluidity, but I think the actual models are better too. It struck me that some shots almost look hand-drawn.

lmao as soon as I saw the explosives lining up across the Breach, I knew there was no way Amaya wasn't igniting them with that elf's magic sword. Sometimes it's okay to see it coming. Her getting captured isn't even a big deal in terms of military strategy. It's not like she can tell them anything.

The Dragon Queen would probably be pretty pissed if she found out Sol Regem was trying to kill her baby. It's what racism gets you, I guess.

I'm beginning to grow suspicious. I don't know if it's suspicion of the Crow Lord or the Crow Master, but it's weird that the former never shows up.

The council is being a little dumb. I don't know that they should be hanging on Ezran as much as they are. For some reason, I wasn't expecting Viren's shadow assassins to actually go after the royal families. I just assumed they'd be causing random chaos.

I like the amount of shit they're throwing at Ezran right outta the gate. And that I can't honestly see the right answer. He's obviously hoping returning Zym will prevent the war, but that's not realistically an answer you can give. And from his perspective, he's not really sure what Claudia and Soren were doing or how in league they were with their father. The other prince is a douchedick regardless though.

Despite not wanting to repeat the mistakes of his father, I kind of feel like he is. An overly optimistic hopeful viewpoint that's probably going to end up going terribly. I guess Claudia can be the one to do his dark magic for him?

I think this is the first time we've heard an elf other than Reyla and the imprisoned elf talk. The Sunfire town is swanky. Not so thrilled about the Moonshadow home. I'm probably just over the wood elf aesthetic.

Oh, you mean he's also sending Katolis' troops to Xadia too? Oh shit, no one could have seen that coming. I don't think I'm a fan of how that went down. It seems super contrived. I'd almost swear I missed a scene that explained the logic behind it.

The soulfang serpents are a cool concept. Glad to see them come back after their first appearance in season one. They're a little more horrifying now that they've shown the victim doesn't die, just runs around as a soulless husk.

Not surprised to see Soren turn on his dad. Wonder how long it'll be before Claudia wises up and does the same.

Reyla climbing the ambler reminds me of Horizon Zero Dawn.

It's a nice touch that the first soldier to lay down their sword is the one that kicked off the plot. He was the one that Reyla spared.

"In your first few days as king, you showed more courage, strength, and grace than most kings show in a lifetime." Well, he also handed the country over to a dictator so...

Goddamn, another Sailor Moon reference. They really like that joke.

Reyla's straight decapitating snakes. How is this Y7? And they're making out now, so hopefully that plot point gets a little rest now.

I wasn't expecting Phee-Phee to die, but I also hadn't really thought about the fact that she's a phoenix. I feel like I would have expected it had I put that together.

Ezran just meeting back up with Callum and Reyla after no time rubs me the wrong way. I'm really not a fan of how that entire plotline went down. It very much seems like it was done to get Viren from the dungeon to the throne and that's it.

Soren and Kasef had sexual tension in their interaction don't @ me.

I was surprised by Harrow's lack of reaction to finding out his best friend used his wife's last moments to collect spell ingredients. I'd be pretty mad.

I give them props for Thunder's death. It was legitimately sad. Callum and Reyla's conversation about it was also pretty good, a nice little encapsulation of the cycle of war theme the show's been all about. The irony, of course, is that bringing Zym back probably isn't going to do shit. It was the catalyst, but this has been brewing for literal centuries and now the humans are marching en masse into Xadia backed by a magic mirror monster. Shit's going down regardless if the Dragon Queen gets her baby back.

Alright, that episode was great enough that I didn't bother typing anything in the middle of it. Lotta shit went down.

Viren is spectacularly bad at politics. He's always been so, but this is probably the peak. Walking up to your army looking like a white-haired, sun-dried raisin and then promising to turn them all into magma monsters doesn't generally test well with key demographics. I guess that's not super relevant if you can just turn them all into magma monsters anyway.

Another "Y7? Really" to add to the pile. Viren fucking disintegrated the Sun Queen. It even started with her face. She died screaming.

The moon worm is getting a bit bigger. A little while longer before he matches the size he is in that thumbnail. A little intrigue introduced here. Apparently he fucked with Sun Queen's granny. I still don't know whether he's an actual demon of some kind, a one-of-a-kind star elf, or just a really bad dude. The only elves we haven't heard of are Stars and Ocean, but I'm not sure you'd see much of the latter in the middle of the continent.

The Dragon Queen is supposedly dead, but I don't know that I buy that. Not really narratively satisfying.

The irony in what Viren's doing is that it will eventually lead to humans flourishing, but it's going to be because they put aside their differences to team up and murder him.
