O4S was pretty crazy and fun.

Question about using PF for stuff like old savage content: I always try to at least minimally prepare for stuff like this by watching a video guide, but they're pretty long (by which time the group may be gone). What's the best way to deal with this? I could just, say, watch all of the 12 OS guides ahead of time or something, but presumably I would end up remembering very little of it!

You should typically just take it one fight at a time. But I haven't gone back and tried to do full clears of old savage fights I missed. Do people really unsync whole tiers at a time now? If it's easy enough to do that now it probably doesn't matter much if you forget a mechanic or two in the process.

Also you should be watching guides in advance of even joining parties and you can probably stick to the less detailed ones like MTQCapture or whatever now that the fights aren't current

No they're not doing whole tiers at a time, it's just that there are few enough parties that I don't know what's going to be up in PF. So say O1S and O4S groups are up, I go watch the video for O4S and come back twenty minutes later, and then only O1S and O12S groups are listed. The fights are complicated enough that I'm probably going to forget over half of it if I don't actually try it that day. I guess one way to solve it would be to list my own groups...!

Based on the few I've done (just O4S and O9S), you still definitely need to know mechanics, but if you do you have enough DPS to skip a lot of them. I assume for the savage Alexander raids you can probably just zerg through a lot of them?

If you want to play with other people on B8, check out the spreadsheet in the first post for peoples' servers. You can play with people on different servers as long as they're in the same data center (most people here are on the Primal data center; Lamia is the plurality server).

As for what class you want to play, it's up to personal preference; note that pretty shortly into the game (I wanna say level 10 or 15?) you can start to freely switch classes whenever you're not in an instance, so if you make a "mistake" and pick a class you don't like it's not a big deal at all. The classes available from the start by role are:

Tank: Gladiator-->Paladin, Marauder-->Warrior

Healer: Conjurer-->White Mage, (Arcanist*)-->Scholar

Melee DPS: Pugilist-->Monk, Lancer-->Dragoon, Rogue**-->Ninja

Physical ranged DPS: Archer-->Bard

Magic ranged DPS: Thaumaturge-->Black Mage, Arcanist-->Summoner

*Arcanist is magic DPS, but can become both a Scholar and Summoner at level 30
**You can't start as a Rogue but can immediately switch to one class switching unlocks

The classes upgrading into jobs thing is a relic of the original version of the game, and other than the arcanist weirdness you can pretty much just consider the jobs to be upgraded base classes that happens at level 30.

Then there are some more jobs that were added in the expansions that you can switch to at higher levels if you own the relevant expansions.

nope you have to go through the base game and three expansions for it

also! it's unisex! male characters can also dress up as 2B

It's a drop from the final boss of the current 24-man raid (which is fairly accessible, but you need to be max level).

You're on the same Data Center so you can play with everyone else (I think, do we have people on Aether/Crystal?). Don't worry about that. All I'll say is please have patience with the game starting out. It really doesn't put its best foot forward, but it all starts finally paying off come Heavensward. Try to take it easy as a sort of 'side-project' kinda game until you start getting close to that point to avoid burnout. It gets a lot of people who try to rush through ARR to get to the good bits.

Gameplay-wise, FF14 assumes you've never played an MMO before and so everything up until level 40 or 50 feels kind of tutorial-ish. A lot of classes don't have rotations that make sense until you hit 70 or so, and nothing is complete until you hit 80. Be patient, it's a long road.

Story-wise, 1-50 can be a bit of a mess but once you're into the latter half of the 2.X patch content it starts getting a lot better. ARR is a long, slow burn that doesn't really pay off until Heavensward.

Yes, you just need to do the intro class quest for the new class (I think they unlock at level 10 for the starter classes, though you'll need to get to maybe ~level 15 in the MSQ before you can go to the other starter cities where some of those quests are).

So when people say get one crafter to 80 and the rest is easy, is it because of the Diadem? Do I just stick with that for the other jobs?

how I've been leveling my crafters:

Levequests from 0-50, along with random GC turnins. I buy everything HQ off the marketboard.

Large scale levequests from 50-70. I buy everything HQ off the marketboard.

After 70, I use my level 80 crafter to make all the custom deliveries requested of the week. You can then turn these in as the class you want to level. For all custom delivery guys but Kai-Shir (and even half of what Kai-Shir wants), you can just trained eye + finish any custom delivery.

Another thing you can do to sprinkle in extra exp is to do beast tribes. (Ixal, Moogles, and Namazu). I believe you can do these as one crafter and turn in as another; but they may have blocked that from HW on.

Ishgard Restoration turn-ins are another good way of getting exp once you've run out of leve allowances, the main difference being you have to actually craft it yourself, whilst with tradecraft leves you can just buy the finished item and hand it in if you can't be bothered to craft it (assuming you have the gil).

Sorry sometimes I buy the materials normal quality off the marketboard and have a friend who's already 80 use their trained eye to save myself 300k gil

Ishgard restoration is a way to save gil while leveling crafters, because it nets you money as you work (and glams, and other things), in exchange for being fairly more time intensive. To most people, that's a good trade.

i saw screenshots of a discord for some of those people who sell clears for $$$, they had a group of like 30 people getting together to vote on what strats they'd all agree to use to clear the fights so they could hotswap out who teams with who. The fact micro-societies form and are profitable for this are kinda amazing to me.

i can't imagine buying a clear (especially with real money), i'd rather just not clear

That seems bonkers to me, but then I suppose you're effectively paying 7 people to carry you through the content, so it has to be worth their time once it's been split 7 (8?) ways.

Part of me didn't think that many people actually took those PF advertisers up on their offer for clears for real money, but clearly there must be if you're only getting on average $30-40 per clear. They have to be carrying a fair few players for it to be worth their while.
