You can go to music school for it, but being a decent one comes more from experience rather than anything that can really be taught. Most conductors have some prior experience playing and build on that. By the time you get to the performance, the conductor is indeed fairly unnecessary, but they're still handy for providing cues, tempo adjustments, and other such pieces of information. During rehearsals, though, they're responsible for putting the whole piece together, making stylistic choices, tempo choices, dynamic choices, orchestration adjustments (you don't always have the same instrument composition as the composer intended), identifying parts that need work and scheduling rehearsals accordingly... There's quite a lot that goes into preparing a musical performance, and it's generally much simpler to have a conductor organize all of that than to have 40+ musicians do it among themselves. --- This is my signature.
