it is baffling to me that MK11 made it over MKX or MK9, MK11 sold well but i didnt see nearly as much buzz when it came out

I don't really know if Tekken 7 could pull it off head to head but a point in its favor is that people don't really like MK11 much. It was an odd pick for the bracket since MK9 is more popular and eligible. Mario is going to be the worst opponent for a game that's trying to get by on name brand rather than quality.

No. Nintendo has a very goofy history when in a poll against itself and the results don't like to be transitive at all.

Case in point, a lot of us were dumb and thought Pokemon could beat Majora's Mask because of it.

More specifically, Pokemon GSC. RBY would probably still take Majora now.

Scorpion and Subzero have always done decent in character battles though, while Tekken hardly gets reps in at all. That's pretty much anyone has to go on considering neither MK or Tekken got in the 2010 or 2015 games contests.

I'll take it though. It gives me consolation that this site prefers the better series.

Maybe, but is any Tekken game as popular as those early MKs? I gotta give MK the overall series edge, and that's part of the reason I give Odyssey the edge with regards to those earlier performances. IMO, it clearly did better in Round 1, and none of Smash's other wins struck me as performances that Odyssey couldn't match (or even outdo).

If most people feel the same way (which I obviously can't say to a certainty, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn it), then isn't this rSFF?

I think this is probably rSFF, but just like in most cases the strength difference is probably negligible. I don't think Odyssey kills Ultimate or anything like that.

I don't think MK11 has any real reason to be weaker or stronger than Tekken. GameFAQs would only care about the 16 bit ones, and everything else might as well be interchangable with any other modern fighter.

Galaxy 2 looked amazing in round 1 when you had to vote for it against a game people don't know or care about but it comes back to earth when it faces a game people care about

don't trust fodder blowouts when voting is forced because people will just settle on the big name

And in a broader scale... I think rSFF is probably more common nowadays, or at least it's a term that needs its meaning modified a bit. If Kirby blows out fodder harder than Link, would Link's 70/30 on Kirby be rSFF? Kirby WOULD be indirectly stronger against some opponents, after all.

Man. This makes even more indies look like garbage. It probably says something that UT/SK/HK/SMB/BoI/Celeste all look like trash while Stardew and Minecraft look great despite the former group having more reasons to click with gamefaqs' base of voters.

At least Cuphead has lived up to its pre contest hype so far.

Shovel Knight was SFFd. Literally its worst opponent in the entire contest.

Why would you use that word?

"Vastly" has nothing to do with it. If Odyssey outperforms Smash at all against a common opponent, and then goes on to lose to Smash, then that is rSFF by the definition we've come to know it for over 15 years. If we want to modify the definition, then that's fine (because we now could be on a site where lesser Nintendo characters might do better against pitiful fodder than Link would).

this just seems like a 50/50 match that the fanbase was going to back one way or the other. I don't think there's any reason to be indignant about it - both games looked about equal, maybe Mario a little bit more, and Smash is where the fanbase sided.

Persona 5 is massively stronger than 4.

It would have to be a noticeable outperformance for me to chalk it up to anything other than random variance

If Odyssey outdoes it by .5% I wouldn't take that to mean it's definitely stronger than Smash indirectly

Especially if Smash is going to win this convincingly

GTAV is currently winning today's regular poll, and this is after at least one person commented on FF5 winning over GTAV at the time of the post. Since then, GTAV has flipped the tables and has consistently beaten FF5 in all 3 "favorite 5 game" polls.

Tekken 7 has been killing it in numbers and popularity Fighting Game eSports tournaments. The most popular game consistently outside Smash Ultimate and Street Fighter V.

At least year's EVO, MK11 did well but Tekken 7 still outdid it in numbers even though it was MK11's first year.

Before EVO got cancelled due to Corona, MK11 wasn't even on the main roster while Tekken 7 was only losing to Smash Ult, Granblue VS and SF5 in numbers

What's the argument for rSFF costing SMO this match against SSBU?

SSB has been a bigger deal than Mario every generation for the past twenty years and SSBU landed a 1-seed to SMO's 2-seed. The Guru contest was 132-7 in favor of SSBU > SMO, and in the Second Chance BOP it was still 14-5 in favor of SSBU > SMO with an estimate of 52.63%. SSBU also prevented LoZ:LBW -- a Zelda-game that won GotY here -- from rSFF'ing it. In fact, though I thought it was unlikely at the time, it's easy to wonder if SSBU could have even SFF'd LoZ:LBW...it's not like we haven't seen SSB do it before with SSBM > LoZ:WW.

I totally agree that MK11 > Tekken 7 was an unexpected surprise, and I think SMO has looked solid all contest. It's possibly the #3 game this contest. However, we really don't know THAT much about these games in this contest, much less this division. We can theorize, but rSFF is a pretty in-depth concept we have only rarely seen if we've ever even seen it at all.

My opinion is we're dodging some other truths that would be accepted most places but considered unusual here: Spider-Man was a legit game, Minecraft is a top-tier indie game, and LoZ:LBW wasn't that big of a deal.

If this is rSFF, there's quite a lot of it. As of this post there would need to be at least 6.5 points of SFF for it to be rSFF. It's certainly possible but I'm getting the impression that SSBU might actually be the stronger game.
