once the virus got to a certain level, the economy was beyond fucked. like you could reopen everything right now and it wouldn't even matter, most people aren't going to expose themselves and go to public places to buy stuff during these times. Businesses were going to take a massive hit regardless if the economy opened or not. Like the few people who would still go out there and buy stuff to keep businesses and the economy flowing aren't going to be enough for these businesses and they were still going to go under.

Hell if anything opening up the economy so soon will cause more rapid spread, more fear and more long term economic damage.

See there is no right solution to this problem we are facing. Reopen and people will get infected and die. Stay closed and the economy will tank with programs to help people going away because no tax money is coming in. Hospitals will shutdown left and right, law enforcement will cease to exist and society as a whole will collapse. It is a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario.

What are we going to do otherwise? Shut down everything for the rest of the year?

We dont have to. Theres actually a pretty big and scalable middle ground where the white house organizes a national response to protect states and the population. Addressing healthcare costs alone would instill confidence in the public towards returning to work.

Fact of the matter is that clear achievable guidelines have been established for months. None of them have been hit because of who controls the legislature and whos sitting in the Oval Office. The alternative to waiting forever is actually doing something, but nothing has actually been done but kick some money around, especially towards lobbying interests.

What needs to happen is close down everything. Including grocery stores. Have marshal law instituted. Every week the military will disperse bread and water to all citizens. Do this indefinitely until a vaccine is available. And then have the government and military vaccinate everyone by law. Anyone who does not comply will be sent to federal prison for minimum 10 years.

We should have gone on full-scale strict national lockdown from the very beginning just like other nations. If we had done that, we would be close to ready to fully re-opening our economy. Unfortunately, we have an ignoramus for a President and we have hardly done anything in months to mitigate the damage or stop the spread. Now we're simply fucked no matter what we do.

One thing is absolutely certain: states should not be opening up yet

Well we need to keep everything locked down until we get the vaccine that fixes everything then

The fact the US hasn't had a lockdown in the first place is a good enough reason to recognize the lack of responsibility by a lot of the population. There has only been a few people in the entire country that were required by any authority to stay on "lockdown" away from others by force because they were tested positive, released from the hospital, and purposely not following directives. Everyone else has been free to leave their house and certainly haven't been on any actual lockdown. When I see people that say they feel like they've been in prison, I truly know they're a pampered little bitch and want to smack them upside the head. Ok, that's not even comparable to house-arrest (let alone any type of actual prison), and then I realize they're so ignorant they truly believe they can't still drive nearly anywhere, go for a walk/run, get take-out or drive-thru, and in most circumstances go visit with friends/family because there's so little real restriction in place (really it's only the social influence that stops people).

Everything has simply been a guideline, not an actual directive or enforced mandate in most places with consequence, especially not to the level of a "lockdown." Businesses have created rules based on the guidelines, but a business has never been an authoritative figure to truly do anything to stop people in these ways.

It truly needs to be enforced with penalties for the economy to open up safely, based on support and backing evidence though and consistent requirements everywhere. Masks being effective needs to be supported at a federal and state level, if the backing is there for everyone who can wear them to do so. If not, then it needs to get to that point. If you can't wear one for health reasons then you are given assistance to avoid needing to be anywhere that requires one or another form of prevention (such as government assisted contactless delivery of groceries, health items, etc).

It's not unlike seatbelts and carseats. They aren't a violation of anyone's rights, but I'm sure before they had laws in place, people didn't feel they were necessary and chose not to wear them (shit, people still do) while people made all the excuses not to do so. They aren't comfy, not everyone is going to get in an accident, the risk is low to yourself or even kids, but the law is still in place to help prevent injuries. People mostly follow the law or they get a ticket or possibly cause harm to themselves or others in their vehicle. That's the end of it and nobody protests against these types of things that are in-place to travel, or they choose an alternative method of travel.

Few people complain about these types of laws (at least now), because of expectations and enforcement. It is not a violation of the constitution or people's rights because they don't have to drive a vehicle unless they follow the rules (just like you don't have to be allowed to do certain things unless you follow the rules). Sure, you could walk outside your home without a mask not around others, just like you could drive in an empty parking lot without a seatbelt. Nobody is going to care or enforce those things because the risk and impact is so minimal. Yet people don't go protesting seatbelt laws and how they shouldn't have to wear one, have passengers wear one, or put their kids in one because they're not comfy or violate their rights.

It really has to be a consistent message and similar regulation across the country though, and it doesn't appear we're going to get there anytime soon, especially not before the economy opens up a lot more.
