Sandboxy is really tough since it's not really an "indie" genre. (And I usually avoid them) But I'll try!
Retro City Rampage
Don't Starve Together
Tokyo Jungle

Run n Gun
Nex Machina
Geometry Wars series
Resogun

I don't know if I have anything here, but I hear The Banner Saga games are pretty good and would also fit into the strategy category

Hotline Miami

Geometry Wars
Jamestown

and I think we'll skip the last one. Maybe those Wayforward games again, but that's all I've really got.

I've heard of Return of the Obra Dinn. It sounds good! I also have Papers, Please. It gets a little stressful, but I guess it wouldn't be fun if it wasn't! Haven't heard of the others.

Horror
Outlast
Soma
Amnesia
Year Walk
I've played Amnesia. I found the controls and mechanics frustrating. I sure do like watching the self made levels and mods, though! Haven't heard of the others.

Visual Novels
One Night Stand

Florence
VA-11 Hall-A
Oxenfree
Haven't heard of any of these. Are they long?

Life Sim
Stardew Valley
Night in the Woods
I don't like farming games so I wouldn't like Stardew Valley. Haven't heard of the other one.

Cooking Games
Battle Chef Brigade
Overcooked series
Are they anything like Cooking Mama?

In Stacking you're a little matryoshka doll and you can stack into different types of people in order to solve puzzles, and then the other two are more standard puzzle games

I've played Amnesia. I found the controls and mechanics frustrating. I sure do like watching the self made levels and mods, though! Haven't heard of the others.

Year Walk is a mobile game, and also on the Wii U, but it's pretty simple. Soma is made by the Amnesia team and plays pretty similar, though the setting very different, and then Outlast leans much harder into overt horror than either of those too.

Haven't heard of any of these. Are they long?

For the visual novels VA-11 Hall-A is the longest one, but the rest are under 5 hours, and Florence is only about an hour. Night in the Woods is also a visual novel, but it's very slice of life oriented so I threw it under that category.

Are they anything like Cooking Mama?

And then neither of the cooking games are anything like Cooking Mama. In Battle Chef you gather ingredients and then you have to do some light Tetris/Puyo sorts of puzzles to cook, and Overcooked is a co-op game where you try to make as much food as you can by dividing up the work.

Turn Based
Transistor
Wargroove
Child of Light

I don't know if I have anything in this department that I've played myself, although there's Blasphemous and Salt and Sanctuary which I know play somewhat similarly. Hollow Knight is good too, but doesn't actually play like Dark Souls.

I know, but it was still a small team that worked on it, so I included it anyway, same goes for Geometry Wars. They're like "honorary" indie games.

Thanks! I don't really play much of anything but indie games so that helps. I don't play many wrpgs, but Disco Elysium and She Dreams Elsewhere both look cool to me. A lot of my friends seem to like Mount and Blade too, but I didn't have much fun when I played it myself.
