again, this needs a lot more justification than "you must live your live in a 1000AD village"

so the basic function of landlords is no more exploitative than anything else.

believe it or not, humans do many things that do not, in and of themselves, involve turning a profit. those things are less exploitative than actions that do turn a profit.

for example, wage labour turns a profit for the company. that company is exploiting the worker by turning a profit. the worker is not exploiting the company by making them money; the worker is the one being exploited.

the relationship between landlord and tenant works the same way

What's exploitative is the seeking of maximum profit to the point where the product or service is degraded, such as scummy landlords who rent gouge, put no maintenance into the buildings, etc.

landlords being better or worse than other landlords is completely irrelevant. the position itself is exploitative

You know what else costs money? Dying. Homelessness. Hospital bills.

You say "why should I pay for someone else to live rent free" except living on the street is only free to the person on the street. You're paying for the problems caused by their Vagrancy and crime with state/county taxes and it costs a lot more than their rent would have been.

If we could afford to give banks billions of fucking dollars why couldn't we afford to give people that money instead so they could pay their fucking mortgages.

The bank will evict them regardless of payment history because banks aren't in the landlording business. They will want to sell the house. They don't rent.

Lol! My first thought when skimming through most of this topic and seeing all the hate spouted off in here. One day I'm going to be a landlord, but I'll be one of the cool ones since I'm already a cool boss to work for :).
