Id like to remind you that the movie Crash won an Academy Award. Critics ate that shit up.

You can like this game, they certainly didnt need my money to be successful. Im just saying that critics arent always a good measure of how good a piece of entertainment actually is.

If you look at the last 18 years or so, there are very few years where Japanese games get a lot of GotY awards from Western press.

I think people highly underrate the core gameplay. It's very MGS-like but more stressful in a nice way. Yeah the puzzles are dumb but sneaking and killing is pretty solid all throughout. It holds up well to playing without cutscenes.

Some of the shooting mechanics feel a little aged today, and some controls feels a little chunky at times when compared to what has come since. The stealth stuff is as good as it ever was so that holds up.

I enjoyed the winter chapter the most by far. Before that the game mostly dragged on with very similar fights, though the build up of Joel and Ellie's relationship is done nicely a lot thanks to the performances. I was always ambivalent of the ending. I remember hating the hospital sequence going through it, but the final lines redeemed it slightly for me because I realized they probably intended to make me feel the way I did.

I found it really intense on the harder/hardest difficulties. Real sense of having to be efficient with your materials (I remember being basically out of resources in the hotel section and having to fight off enemies with whatever the first guy dropped).

The characterisation and key relationship between the leads was compelling, even if the plotting was a bit off, and the pacing was strange - 'Spring' felt basically rushed. The Autumn and Winter sections had a much less claustrophobic feel, the best character scenes (e.g. the scenes at the house), and most of the best set pieces (the siege at the Dam, exploring the university, defending the shack with David, sneaking as Ellie).

One of the very few modern action adventure games I would put in the same class as e.g. MGS1/2/3 and RE4. I think it was my second Platinum trophy on PS4 too.

You'll be able to buy a PS4 on the cheap in the coming months, if you feel like it. Otherwise, it's very likely that Sony will make this one's backwards compatibility a priority for the PS5.
