How do you order?

Boss just bought me lunch. Wanted the steak but it was one of the pricier menu options so I went with something else. I'm sure if I'd ordered the steak she wouldn't have mentioned it, but I felt awkward about it.

Should be mentioned that 99.9% of the time it's paid for by the company (as an expense) and that is even written off for taxes, so yeah, long as your not order 3 things off the menu or something, they probably won't care.

If you secede the steak you're expressing your simp-ness.

But I'd get the scallops.

You can't get scallops without steak unless you have breasts, it's in the rule book.

Yeah, ordering diner for a lunch meeting does sound as abusing their generosity.

Order what you want. You can always ask if they're really okay with paying for that much, and offering to pay your way if it's more than they were expecting to pay for.

I would order only what I would normally order if I was paying for the meal.

On another note, I have been volunteering to plan our office birthday luncheon for the past several months. I have not been given any sort of budget but I still try and be reasonable about it. Some coworkers have jokingly, or not jokingly, suggested I go crazy on the food but in practice we often end up with too much leftovers and some folks in the office will not eat leftovers. To me it is just a complete waste to buy way more than we need and I can only imagine some coworkers simply want to take advantage of the extra free food. I do not mind volunteering to plan these and do feel if we abuse it, management will just stop paying for these monthly luncheons.

It depends for me, i have an excellent relation with my manager (HR Manager) so i would've ordered the whole menu and then joke about it. If it was the EGM (Executive General Manager) i would go with the moderate option cuz of impressions and honestly i just don't like that guy at all..

I'd just make a reasonable order. Even if it's a treat, it's still with someone else's money. I don't eat that much, anyway.

Depends on the situation. I would hate to make them pay more. But I also know some people who will keep telling you to get more. And to get some to take home... Though, I dont feel bad about ordering what I want if I order first. Like when I ordered stuff at Taco Bell in an airport, and people fought to pay for my lunch...

isn't that part of the question though? would you just make your normal lunch order or order something you don't usually eat for lunch because you're not paying for it.

If "employer" means company money, I'm going to be more likely to spend more than if my boss is spending out of their pocket. Granted, right now my boss is the CEO so... in theory there's a bit of overlap?

Sort of a combination of the two. I'd probably be inclined to order something I like but which isn't too expensive or in massive portions, but that's more or less how I'd order with absolutely no restrictions anyway. I'm not really into the idea of going someplace where I'm ordering $100 meals or eating three times the body mass of the average human regardless of who's paying.

Treat others like you want to be treated.

I believe my response answered that question by very clearly implying I'd just order what I normally order as what I normally order isn't expensive and thus I wouldn't feel like I'm taking advantage of the situation by ordering expensive food.
