I watched the anime and read the manga after the anime was done. They cut the anime off about 60% of the way through the story, and could have probably squeezed another 80-200 episodes out of it. But they didn't. It came back a few years later as Inuyasha: The Final Act and they crammed the remainder of the story that might have taken 80+ episodes into only 26.
