They won't have a full-on SWAT, but they'll definitely have one of the characters lie to an authority figure to get the other one in trouble. Arthur's pretty legit at walking the line. Arthur himself has actually become quite the moral relativist asshole in the recent seasons, so it'll probably be him.

Source: Have been watching Arthur since 1996.

(Their gay marriage episode was abysmal, though. As was the recent Family is Important [and maybe adoption?] special. And there was never any point to the Compsons.)

it was really well done imo. it wasn't a ""gay marriage" episode. it was an episode about them helping a friend with his wedding, and at the end his spouse happened to be same sex. the entire point was aside from one character having a conflict, no one else cared or seemed to acknowledge it.

It WASN'T about them helping a friend with his wedding. They were working to sabotage the wedding because of a misunderstanding of who he was marrying.

And that's the whole problem! This was tokenism of the highest order. Mr. Ratburn goes to mitzvahs and pool parties and cookouts with these children; they go to summer camps that he runs; they are trusted to visit his house for unsupervised lessons/fun/trick-or-treating; he invites them to his hobbyist birdwatching excursions and volunteers to direct their plays; they engage the same in civic picnics and funruns. There is no reason for the children to have not only known that he had a special someone (even if they'd never met them), but also it was positively unbelievable that Mr. Ratburn would have (1) kept his upcoming nuptials from them, (2) have no actual opinions on the flowers and details of his wedding such that Patty got to domineer the preparations, (3) take phone calls during class related to the wedding that he had barrelling down at him in under two weeks without having prepared for.

His entire character is built around deliberation, time management, cultivation of interests and a sincere love of his community. All of that is thrown away when you introduce a new character, in a new business (Patrick's Chocolates is a direct confection competitor to David Read's catering business, the Sugar Bowl and Brain's mom's ice cream store) --- censors in conservative markets can add long 'woman' hair to Patrick or change his Flash sprite, since he appeared on screen for mere seconds and with only two lines in one scene, and they never have to go back to Patrick's Chocolates again because it's not an established part of town. (Edit to add: They have visited Patrick's once since, shown either walking out the door or possessing a bag from his shop, but I don't think they actually spoke the name of the store or spoke to him in the subsequent appearance of the store). The episode wasn't even a two-parter. We didn't even get to see Ratburn eat cake at his own wedding, despite knowing that cake is one of his favorite things. Also, just, no with the whole tired Patty/Patrick sex ambiguity and "Mr. Ratburn, who is artistic, nurturing and well-dressed, is gay!" stereotypes.

Chip, Muffy's brother, would have made a superior gay character.

Oh yea. My point still stands about that episode. The point was that to the other kids the big deal (and only deal) was concern for the spouse. When dealing with pushback because of gender it was just a quick oh. I didnt notice...but look help us with something that actually matters. As it should be. Just like any other wedding. I think presenting it in that way, by acknowledging bigots but also treating it like anything else, was pretty smart.

Not trying to start something, but I honestly think you're misremembering the plot, because there was no pushback in the episode to two men getting married, by adults or children. Any controversy was all real-world rumbling by people who clearly didn't watch the episode. The traditional abnormality of their union wasn't mentioned in any way and the only discomfort shown by any characters whatsoever was that of the children in their fear about how their teacher would be treated. There weren't adults featured in this episode other than Nigel and Patty* Ratburn, Patrick and a short appearance by Ms. Turner (although she also got more screentime than Patrick).

If Ratburn were marrying a woman, this episode would be just as bewildering, though I think this is sadder for the way something that should be beautiful and felt beautiful to the creators, according to interviews just feels like box-checking. The person he marries is an afterthought. We know nothing of his compatibility with Patrick. In seeking to make gay marriage "not a big deal," the writers wholly skipped over what makes marriage and dedication to someone for your life an appropriately big deal to actually celebrate.

*Patty was also a brand-new character for this episode, existing only as a narrative distraction. Poor Rodentia was reduced to a blubbering mess, with recent personal tragedy inadvertently intimated through bad writing. :(
