Remember when Bill Maher used to joke about how it's okay to fuck little boys? And called the 9/11 Victims cowards?

And George Carlin.... Well 80% of what he said.

Now I'm not defending their jokes but the fact is they could not say it today, comedians and hosts used to say whatever they thought was funny. Some of it hit, some didn't.

Now they say whatever they think no one will be offended by. Because one bad joke or wrong utterance will get them fired and their family harrased.

These shows just aren't as important as they used to be and most of these guys are either burning out or burnt out long ago. It's a total grind. They have to do this shit nearly every single day.

Conan's podcast is refreshing. Listen to any where he talks to another talk show host and it's pretty evident.

Nobody said either of these things were true.

The point is comedians can't be off the cuff anymore. Johnny Carson never had to consider and evaluate what he was going to say before he said it. He just said shit he thought was funny

That's why Colbert/Stewart are better than a lot of these other guys, he's naturally less likely to say anything that might offend anyone so it comes across as more natural.

Everyone else is safe and sterile.

Nothing Kimmel has ever said sounds natural and you can tell he's mulled over everything he says in head 2/3 times before he says it outright.

It's like 1984 or Soviet Russia. Performing when Big Brother is always watching in case you say the wrong thing

Even if you never say "the wrong thing" your performance will still be worse than people who "Never said the wrong thing" who performed without Big Brother watching

Its low hanging, easy to understand jokes. Always has been. Trump as a president just gives so much material on a daily basis.

Go back and watch Episodes from the early 2000s and you'll see they covered Bush a whole lot. Go back to Clinton's scandal and see how often they made jokes about him. Its what Late night hosts do. People just got asshurt that they had the nerve to use jokes to call out Trump's terrible leadership and borderline racism.

Conan keeps getting better. He moved content online before all these people. So this quarantine shit hasn't affected him too much.

And has talented enough staff, not just writers, to do guest work or off-shoot series.

2. Usually those bits were part of an act, not the entire act.

3. Everyone is doing it and making the same jokes as everyone else. It's old.

Colbert has become unbearable because every bit his does the same formulaic anti-Trump shtick for years now. It got stale.

I'll bring up George Carlin again, he roasted the shit out of whoever was in office but for a few minutes mixed in with legitimately good material. And as a result a lot of his stuff is pretty timeless (let's not mention 9-11 here <_<)

He didn't just go "Trump! LOL!" for 10 minutes every week while a guy pretends to laugh on a piano.

The keyword you're missing there is the all. That's the part that drags people down. You gotta be clever and witty like me. Not just point at the president and hope for the best.

Stewart was amazing. So much quality comedy he did back then. His interviews with Bill o Reilly were epic.

Colbert is a bitch. I dont begrudge him his success but they really scraped the bottom of the barrel when they chose him.

Noah is condescending. Not a fan.

Bill Mahr is a legend. One of the best in the biz.

Conan is epic, my favorite host. Hurt to see him get passed over by this little fuck

Bill Burr isn't worried about what he is saying. He's just trying to be funny. And as a result, he is funny.

That's the point. The hosts are afraid to do the same thing for fear of offending someone.

Colbert or Kimmel would not do a joke about Oprah just in case, so they'd go "Maybe Armstrong would fit in the Trump Administration!" and the Piano guy would fall about. And it wouldn't be funny.

He's talking about late night talk show hosts. Not comedians.

They did constantly make fun of the President. Because again they're on 5 nights a week. They joke about the daily news and that often has the President. I watched Leno and Conan during the Bush years. I think people have some rose-tinted glasses if they think these shows are any different today.

I think Burr and Norm have a very warm and respectful relationship where they all admire each other's works.

Olyphant and Hader (and I stupidly forgot Kristen Bell/Dax Shepard) are phenomenal guests not just because they are funny but because he's actually friends with them in real life.
