A couple thoughts

1: I'm not a fan of the 3D Portraits or events. I feel like this is just going to be a third tier of cosmetic DLC that Paradox immediately milks. Now we have music, unit sprites, AND 3D portraits.

2: Does Paradox share UI across their projects? Because it looks exactly like M&B Bannerlord.

3: There's rumors that they're going to get rid of crusades/holy wars because they're not PC anymore to focus on.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-10-22-paradox-says-its-yet-to-decide-whether-crusader-kings-3-has-deus-vult

4: It's hard to go from a game like CK2 with $250 worth of "content" and stripping it all back down to 0 for a vanilla release.

Overall I'm worried about this one, scoobs.

How many years and hundreds of dollars worth of DLC will it be before it's better than CK2? And lol if they take the crusades out of "Crusader" Kings.

And read my article before calling me a shitposter. They're looking at more than the language of deus vult; obviously the mechanical intention, e.g: storm the middle east, isn't exactly popular either, and they mention that. Historically inaccurate but a politically correct mechanic to replace or simulate it is on the cards, but no one knows yet.

I know it's a meme, but literally everything you just said is wrong

1. The portraits use an ethnicity system like Imperator and are complete from the beginning.

2. Paradox has no affiliation with Bannerlord. They aren't even publishing it.

3. Alt-right garbage. I'm not even going to comment further.

4. CK3 includes a good bit of CK2's DLC from the get-go. Old Gods, the religion stuff, Conclave, and the map expansions to name a few.

It's a constant issue paradox has to deal with with how their games work. HoI and Stellaris in particular attract a lot of literal nazis

IIRC, people won't stop modding the bog-standard humans to be only white.
For...reasons.

I see a lot of complaining about DLC, so I feel like it's worth mentioning that how their DLC generally works has shifted considerably since CK2: generally speaking, it doesn't lock out as much. Mostly bells-and-whistles and really unique stuff, to avoid the horror show that was having retinues(in CK2) and development(in EUIV) not available to everyone(because that was really goddamned stupid).

Also, I would caution that PDX releases can be a bit rough. With CK2 and EUIV, it briefly seemed like they had that ironed out, but then Stellaris, HoIIV and Imperator happened.

Lastly, they have a huge sale going on Steam. Standard discounts, and Stellaris is free all weekend. Predictably, the anniversary patch tanked performance just in time for the game's big moment(apparently, every single pop in the galaxy decides which ethics-related faction it should be in daily.)

I heard horror stories of endgame slowdown happening on the first year of the game. Think I'll be staying on 2.6 for a little while longer

Can these games still be enjoyed when it's vanilla or almost-vanilla? I have CK2 and Stellaris and I haven't really touched either because the mechanics seem intimidating (especially CK2's) and then the DLC is a staggering amount.

Stellaris in particular puts almost all of the features from the DLC into the free patches.

CK2 has quite a few dlc that really help flesh out the game into something amazing but the base game is still enjoyable.

Part of the enjoyment of these games is figuring out the complex mechanics and continuing to get better at it for hundreds of hours imo

@Leanaunfurled

  • Start in Ireland at the earliest start date
  • Press play and click on shit that pops up
  • Want more land? Either get some marriage pacts, get like a 4th in line claim on the title, "convince" the other people to get out of the line.
  • Or get it though war, but you've got to have claims to the land which you can get though a variety of ways
It's really not that hard. A lot of time you're watching the days go by waiting for something new to happen. There is only really a few things you need to understand about the mechanics of the game to enjoy it. How to get claims, what your council members do, how things are inherited, all of which can be explained pretty easily

But I do understand that feeling. I keep trying and trying to get into Baldur's Gate, but I just can't. I find it too much to deal with

Thankfully, they just put out a beta patch for Stellaris, that's supposed to fix the performance issues(and a few others), so if you fire that up(whether you're TC or some one else), make sure to opt into that.

I haven't played Stellaris since the latest patch, so I can't tell you how bad the performance was and how much this helps, other than 2.6.3 performed pretty well for me.

Stellaris moreso than CK2, but yes. To both.
I want to say Earl Murchad of Leinster is the go-to guy for Ireland in 1066. His dad rules a neighboring county and is super old, so you'll inherit it before long, which helps. Playing as a Count can be a bit slow though. If you need more action, go with Duke Robert "Guiscard" de Hauteville of Apulia(in southern Italy). You can holy war the Muslims in Sicily and have a strong base to crusade from.

Stellaris, well, part of the fun is designing your own empires.
