And can they recognize another person or animal by scent?
We have two cats. The second one we got within the last year, it took her a bit to warm up. Well the older one (Max) we take him to the groomer to get shaved before every summer because he's a super long haired cat, it seems uncomfortable in the summer months, and he gets ridiculously matted. We bring him home and the younger cat (Lilly) is pissed. She keeps hissing at him, like she did when we first brought her home, before she warmed up. Does she not recognize Max with the buzzcut? Can't she tell he's the same cat by scent? --- The Phantom has spoken! ... Copied to Clipboard!

No not really.
They have a stronger sense of smell than humans but it doesn't compare to the average dog's. That being said, I would've thought that cats would be able to distinguish each other by scent. But I never had a cat so don't know too well. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

The difference is that cats won't be trained like dogs in tracking smells.
I see cats track smells of other animals and things all the time. But there is no way in hell to teach a cat to track down a person... unless they want too. Even then they wouldn't bother unless they know the smell than just a smell from some random person. --- The Evil Republicans - Est.2004 - WoT [Government Destabilizing Branch] ... Their sense of smell isn't as sophisticated as a dog's, but it's still miles ahead of ours. Cats are actually very scent-oriented.
The reason Lily is getting all worked up is because Max looks and smells weird and she doesn't understand why and isn't 100% sure he's Max. Yes, cats are dumb jerks, why do you ask? ... Copied to Clipboard!
